I'm Mikayla Daniels, and that was a tagline for To Have and Have Not from 1944.
The next film to be airing on Saturday Night Cinema on KSPS PBS.
The story around this film is that director Howard Hawks and writer Ernest Hemingway were on a ten day fishing trip, where a bet was made for Hawks to direct a film based off of Hemingway's worst book, To Have and Have Not.
Hemingway's novel was a dark tale of a down on his luck man running anyone and anything that looked like turning a buck out of Cuba in the pre-war years.
The film itself has a more romantic vibe and is only loosely based on the book.
However, referring to the book as a novel is not entirely accurate.
It consists of two short stories and a novella loosely linked.
Originally titled One Trip Across and The Trade Man's Return, the short stories constitute the novel's first two books, but make up only about one fifth of the book's overall length.
Since they all stand on their own or and are told in third and first person narration respectively, they awkwardly stand out from the larger final third of the book.
Literary reviewers came down hard on To Have and Have Not.
J. Donald Adams, in his article for The New York Times Book Review, found the novel, “In spite of its frequent strengths as narrative writing, distinctly inferior to “A Farewell to Arms”.” As if that wasn't enough.
Several places banned To Have And Have Not, a year after its release.
In Detroit, the book was designated as obscene, and as a result, the city removed it from public sale.
The public library halted its circulation, and the Wayne County prosecutor barred its sale after a complaint from Catholic organizations.
Likewise, in New York, the borough of Queens forbade its distribution.
The American Civil Liberties Union reported To Have And Have Not as the only book suppressed during 1938.
Now the character Harry Morgan was the bright side of the written story, and that is what transferred to the film version, assisting Hawks in transferring To Have And Have Not to the screen was William Faulkner.
While he is one of the credited writers on the film and for the screenplay.
His exact contributions to the script are unclear.
Jules Firthman, and a figure known as Stuttering Sam, assisted Faulkner in writing the screenplay, and there's no reason to believe that they played any lesser role than their soon to be more famous co-writer.
Hawks was also the type of director specifically known for imposing his vision onto the screenwriters, with his on set changes to the story and dialog.
Now, add to all of this the freedom given to Humphrey Bogart and others in the cast to customize their role, and Faulkner's influence becomes virtually impossible to truly know.
This was the first of four Bogart Bacall films.
The second was The Big Sleep.
1946, also directed by Howard Hawks.
Dark Passage in 1947, directed by Delmer Davies, and Key Largo in 1948, directed by John Houston.
Bacall was just 19 when this fil After meeting on set, the two soon began a relationship that included meeting up secretly amid Bogart's divorce.
Bacall almost lost her studio contract when Hawks found out about the budding relationship, and some say he had his own desire for her.
Bogart and Bacall married on a friend's farm in Ohio in 1945, and their son Stephen was born in 1949, and they welcomed their daughter Leslie in 1952.
Bogart was diagnosed with cancer in 1956, and despite Bacall support and care, he died in January of 1957.
