“This is love cherished by evil.
Darkened by a secret.
No one dared to tell.” I'm Mikayla Daniels, and that was one of the taglines for Gaslight from 1944.
I'm here with my web comments on the film for the upcoming airing of Saturday Night Cinema on KSPS PBS.
Ingrid Bergman pulls off an exceptionally powerful performance in this film and rightfully earned her Best Actress Oscar.
But I want to talk about another actress in this Angela Lansbury.
This was her very first film role, and she was only 18 when she acted in this film.
She had been working in a department store, and when she told her boss that she was leaving, he offered to match the pay at her new job.
He, of course, expected it to be in the region of her salary there at the department store, which was around $27 a week.
He was shocked when he heard her salary would be $500 a week for her new acting job.
Lansbury was required to wear platform shoes in every scene to appear taller, more domineering and sinister in comparison to Bergman's.
Paula Lansbury's height drew even more notice to Charles Boyer small stature and added to the number of scenes where Boyer was forced to stand on an apple box to increase his height.
Apple boxes, for those unfamiliar with the term, are wooden boxes or crates of varying sizes, with holes on each end, and are mainly used in film production under the role of the grip department.
They are multi-use on a film set, with of course, helping to boost an actor's height on screen, but also two level camera, dolly tracks, prop up furniture or light stands and more.
Originally with a forward opening in the box, they were first used for storage of small objects.
Thanks for checking out my behind the scenes web comments on Gaslight, and make sure to tune in to KSPS PBS on Saturday night for your entertaining night in.
