My name is Cecelia and welcome to my web extra on the upcoming screening of the science fiction horror film Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
You can watch this film and many others every week on Saturday Night Cinema on KSPS PBS.
Today I'd like to talk about horror movies.
I love horror movies, and The Invasion of the Body Snatchers tickles that part of my brain that wants to be totally creeped out.
Call me crazy, but psychological horror just scratches that itch for me.
Psychological horror is a subgenre of horror fiction with a focus on portraying disturbed emotional or mental states to inspire fear.
Psychological horror films aim to create dread in the viewer by exposing universal fear and parts of the human psyche that are often repressed.
The affiliation to the mind is what separates psychological horror from subgenres like body horror or splatter punk, which focuses more on gore and visceral depictions of violence to inspire fear.
In many cases, psychological horror films deploy an unreliable narrator or imply that aspects of the story are being perceived inaccurately by the protagonist.
An example of an unreliable narrator would be Leonardo DiCaprio's character in the 2010 film Shutter Island.
The audience is fed contradicting information, unraveling the criminal investigation, and poking holes in Teddy's reality.
Throughout the film, it becomes more and more apparent that he is a patient at the insane asylum, not a guest.
Sometimes psychological horror seeks to confuse the audience's understanding of the plot by focusing on characters who are themselves unsure of their own perceptions of reality.
This is especially apparent in Stephen King's The Shining, as Jack devolves and his behavior becomes more deranged.
The audience is left to question if the haunting is real, a figment of Jack's insanity, or something different altogether.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers creates an atmosphere steeped in paranoia, as trust between the characters quickly deteriorates.
They are forced to mimic the unsettling conditions of their own demise in a futile attempt to survive it.
They have no control, no understanding of what is happening, and they cannot escape assimilation.
