The name was formally shortened to York in 1915.
York is called the White Rose City, and early settlers from York County, Pennsylvania brought the name down with them.
It traces back to an area in England controlled by the Duke of York that used the white rose as its symbol.
There are about 180 buildings within The York National Register Historic District, and a few of those include the circus buildings.
The Barnett Brothers Circus was a professional circus.
It was the second largest motorized circus in the United States at one time, and it traveled by truck instead of by railroad, which is unusual.
It traveled across the United States between April and November, and it would winter here in New York.
The performers and the animals were also part of the Christmas parades.
Residents on the weekends would come and visit the circus lot and they could pet the animals.
♪ The community can help the Historical Center of York County by donating family memorabilia, and objects that help tell the stories of the people who lived here.
We are located about two blocks from the courthouse on the former campus of the York Graded School, which is now known as McKelvey Center, and we continue the legacy of education by providing access to the archival and historical collections for genealogical and historical research.
♪ <Jordan Garrett> We have lots of customers that tell us that they live in Nashville or Charlotte, wherever they're visiting from, and that they wish they had a store like ours there.
We have the largest variety of bakery items, anywhere in several counties.
We carry a large variety of CBD products to relieve anxiety and stress from the dogs, for when they go to the groomer, the vet or travel.
We try to have a good variety of items.
We also like to use companies that are smaller.
We also use local vendors for a lot of our supplies to see how important it is to shop local, spend your money local.
We prefer when dogs come in with their owners to let the dogs pick out their own items.

♪ York Coffee Roastery was developed to try to bridge the gap between the services that young folks would get in the school system and the services that they would need as adults after school.
Max Abilities has been in our local community.
We serve all of York County for over 40 years, and the mission of Max Abilities is to support people with various disabilities that will last them their entire life, and we started working to raise the money to build a store.
We could bring kids in that needed employability skills, but maybe weren't quite ready to get a full time job yet.
We have had a variety of students working here since we opened and we have some folks that jump in and just love it right away and others, they have to get a little comfortable with the job that they're being asked to do, and as they gain experience, they are less nervous and enjoy the work more.
So, I think it's very typical of any work situation.
We have contracts with two school districts that are close by and they bring students who are nearing graduation in to learn those jobs skills that you learn on the first job.
We work with soft skills, looking folks in the eye, saying good morning when somebody walks into the coffee shop, making sure that you clock in and out on time, listening, following instructions.
Those are all job skills that translate to any profession, not just a coffee shop, but it's a great way, it's a low pressure way for young folks to learn those jobs skills.
We have job coaches that are trained in how to work with our special needs community.
So the pressure is reduced as they're learning those skills.
We get to meet new people and we get free coffee when we're done working.
♪ I think folks enjoy seeing a business supporting people in their community in a meaningful way.
