NEWSOM SPENT HIS ENTIRE LOVE HIGHLIGHTING CLASS STRUGGLE AND RACIAL INJUSTICE BOTH ACADEMICALLY AND ARTICICLY.
GROWING UP IN THE U.S. SOUTH IN THE 1950s AND '60s IN AND THE SON OF CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS IT SEEMS THIS WAS A ROLE HE WAS BORN TO PLAY.

THAT WAS MY NAME MY PARENTS GAVE ME AT BIRTH AND THE NAME HAS CHANGED DUE TO MY WRITING AND ART.
I'M FROM A FAMILY OF ARTISTS.
MY BROTHER FLOYD WHO JUST PASSED IN AUGUST OF THIS YEAR, AND THEN MY SISTER VICKY IS A JAZZ MUSICIAN.
SO I LIKE IT.
BUT IT ALSO IS A COMMITMENT, YOU KNOW?
IT'S SOMETHING I'M COMMITTED TO IT HAS TO DO WITH MY PHILOSOPHY IN TERMS OF IDENTITY, SOCIAL JUSTICE ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> MADONNA AND THE POLICE, I'M TALKING ABOUT POLICE VIOLENCE AND SUGGESTING THAT THESE UNARMED PEOPLE THAT KILL AND THE PEOPLE WHO MISS THEM ONCE THEY'RE GONE.
I ALSO BELIEVE THAT I NEED -- I HAVE TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND RESPECT THE ANCESTRAL ARTS, THAT AFRICAN ART FOR ME WHAT I FEEL CONNECTED TO, AND I BELIEVE THAT EVERYTHING, ALMOST EVERYTHING I DO KIND OF SPEAKS TO THAT APPRECIATION, RESPECTFUL ANCESTORS.
ONE THAT PEOPLE REMEMBER IS -- I CARVED A BOY ABOUT ALMOST 5' TALL BOY THINKING OF EMMETT TILL.
CARVED OUT OF MAPLE, YELLOW MAPLE AND IT IS STAINED IN JACOVIAN STAIN, IT IS VERY DARK, BUT IT MADE THE FIGURE LOOK LIKE IT HAD BEEN CREMATED, BUT IT'S A PRETTY HORRIBLE TO LOOK AT.
>> I REALLY DO THIS BECAUSE I'M TRYING TO CHANGE MINDS.
I WANT PEOPLE TO LOOK AT MY WORK AND THINK ABOUT WHAT THEY SEE AND THINK ABOUT WHAT ACTIONS CAN THEY TAKE IN RESPONSE TO WHAT THEY SEE.

YOU KNOW, YOU CAN'T READ ANYTHING ABOUT MARTIN KING'S ASSASSINATION WITHOUT COMING ACROSS MY DAD'S NAME, FLOYD NEWSOM.
MY MOTHER WAS THE CAMPAIGN MANAGER FOR THE FIRST BLACK MAN TO RUN FOR MAYOR IN 1968.
SO THEY WERE VERY MUCH INVOLVED IN THE LOCAL CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT IN MEMPHIS.

I RECENTLY DID A PAINTING THAT HONORS OUR ANCESTORS IN INTERESTING WAYS.
ONE WAY IS I USE FABRIC OR I --I DO A PIECE BASED ON A TEXTILE DESIGN THAT'S POPULAR IN ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> THEN IN ANOTHER PLACE I USE VICINITY, A FORM OF WRITING AND IDIOGRAMS WHICH TIE NIGERIA AND CAMEROONS TO SECRET SOCIETIES.
THE PIECE IS CALLED AFTER THE FIRE.

♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> THE SHOWS THAT WE'VE BEEN, WORKING ON IN THE SCENESHIP SHOP ALL SEMESTER LONG TAKES PLACE IN A CLASSROOM SETTING.
THE SECOND SHOW THAT WE DID WAS AN OPERA AND IT IS A CINDERELLA STORY, BUT TOLD IN A LITTLE BIT MORE MODERN WAY AND THE FINAL SHOW THAT WE DID THIS SEMESTER WAS THE MUSICAL "HEATHERS. "
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> MY NAME IS KELLY MANGAN, AND I AM A SCENIC DESIGNER AND SCENIC ARTIST AND PROP MAKER IN THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATER AND FILM.
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> BEFORE YOU START DESIGNING FOR A SHOW, YOU KIND OF HAVE TO BECOME THE DIRECTOR IN YOUR HEAD, TOO.
YOU HAVE TO KNOW THE SCRIPT BACKWARDS AND FORWARDS.
I DON'T SKETCH.
THEY'RE MY FIRST IDEAS.
I START CUTTING APART LITTLE PIECES OF PAPER AND GLUING THEM TOGETHER.
WE TALKED ABOUT THE FACT THAT THE ENTRANCE FROM OUTSIDE INTO THE LIVING ROOM WAS REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT FOR EVERYBODY THAT CAME TO THE HOUSE.
SO I PUT THAT UP ON A SERIES OF PLATFORMS SO THAT ALL OF THE AUDIENCE CAN SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON.
THIS IS THE FIRST FLOOR OF THE WOLF CENTER.
THIS HALLWAY HOUSES THE SCENE SHOP AND THE COSTUME SHOP.
WE'LL START HERE WITH THE SCENE SHOP WHERE WE BUILD ALL OF THE SCENERIES FOR ALL OF THE SHOWS.
>> WE USUALLY TRY TO HAVE ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF OF REALLY DEDICATED TIME FOR EACH OF THE SHOWS.
WE DON'T ALWAYS GET THAT.
SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO BUILD A SHOW IN A MONTH.
SOMETIMES WE GET TWO MONTHS TO BUILD A SHOW.
A LOT OF TIMES WE'RE OVERLAPPING.
WE MIGHT BE BUILDING THREE DIFFERENT SHOWS IN EACH OF THE SHOP.
THE STUDENTS DO ALMOST ALL OF THE WORK IN THE SCENE SHOP.
THE SHOP FOREMAN AND THE TECHNICAL DIRECTOR, THEY ARE THERE TO MAKE SURE THAT IT'S DONE RIGHT AND SAFELY, BUT THE STUDENTS ARE HANDS-ON ALL OF THE TIME.
WE DON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH STUDENTS CUTTING THE WOOD, MEASURING THE WOOD, LOOKING AT THE DRAWINGS.
THEY ALL KNOW HOW TO READ FLOOR PLANS AND ELEVATIONS OF THE WORK THAT WE'RE GOING TO DO SO THAT THEY CAN KNOW HOW TO BUILD THEIR OWN CUTLETS.
THEY KNOW THE TOOLS THAT ARE APPROPRIATE FOR THOSE CUTS.
THEN AFTER IT'S BUILT IT ALL HAS TO BE PUT BACK TOGETHER SO THAT WE CAN SORT OF TEST FIT IT.
THEN IS ALL COMES BACK APART AND GETS LAID DOWN ON THE FLOOR TO BE PAINTED.
>> IN THE BACK OF THE SCENE SHOP WE'VE GOT A DEDICATED PAINT ROOM WHERE WE CAN USE THAT SPACE TO MIX PAINT, DO SAMPLES AND BASICALLY PREP FOR ALL OF THE STUFF THAT WE HAVE TO DO FOR SCENIC ART FOR A SHOW.
>> WHEN YOU'RE PAINTING ESPECIALLY LIKE WOODGRAIN IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE IF THE DIRECTOR WALKS IN AND YOU'RE ONLY HALF DONE.
MOST OF THE TIME YOU'LL GET THE COMMENT OF IS THAT WHAT IT'S GOING TO LOOK LIKE?
THE BASE COAT IS UGLY.
IT'S BRIGHT AND NOT WHAT YOU EXPECT IT TO BE.
THAT BIG BRUSH THAT CAN DO THAT BLEND DOESN'T GET INTO ALL OF THE NOOKS AND CRANNIES, AND SO YOU HAVE TO GET OUT SMALLER BRUSHES AND THE PROCESS IS NOT ALSO PRETTY.
YOU HAVE TO TRUST THAT THERE ARE STEPS THAT YOU FOLLOW.
YOU PUT YOUR BASE COAT DOWN --WELL, EVEN BEFORE THAT, YOU HAVE TO PUT ANOTHER BASE COAT DOWN BECAUSE WE REUSE FLATS ALL OF THE TIME.
I MIGHT BE PAINTING A FLAT WHERE ONE OF THEM IS BLUE AND THE OTHER ONE IS DWREL LOW AND YELLOW AND THE OTHER ONE IS PURPLE AND I HAVE TO GET THAT BACK TO A GENERAL COLOR AND I'LL HAVE THAT CREAM AND THEN I'LL START WITH THE BOTTOM COAT OF THE ART FINISH.
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> IN THE COSTUME SHOP, COSTUMES ARE NOT WHAT YOU THINK OF A GARMENT.
IT'S HAIR, IT'S MAKEUP, IT'S JEWELRY, IT'S SHOES, IT'S HATS.
IT'S ALL OF THE STUFF THAT IS ABOUT THE ACTOR AND WHAT THEY WEAR.
STUDENTS WILL BUILD IN THE COSTUME SHOP AS MUCH AS THEY DO IN THE SCENE SHOP.
THEY GET THEIR HANDS ON ALL OF THE STUFF THAT WE DO.
THE STUDENTS WILL PULL GARMENTS THAT WE HAVE IN STOCK AND HEM AND DO THE ALTERATIONS.
TECH WEEK IS ACTUALLY THE MOST, I THINK, EXCITING PART OF ALL OF IT.
WE GET TO SEE ALL OF THE PLANNING THAT WE'VE DONE FOR WEEKS AND WEEKS AND WEEKS COME TO FRUITION.

>> IT'S PERFECT FOR RIGHT NOW.
>> RED, YELLOW, LEATHER.
>> AND THEN OPENING NIGHT IS A LITTLE BITTERSWEET BECAUSE IT'S ON ITS OWN.
IT'S LIKE SENDING A KID OUT THE DOOR TO GO TO KINDERGARTEN.
IT'S, LIKE, YOU'VE GOT NO MORE CONTROL.
WHAT'S COOL IS LISTENING TO THE AUDIENCE AND LISTENING TO THE CAST AND THE CREW AFTER THE SHOW TALK ABOUT HOW PROUD THEY WERE.
THEY SAY YOU SHOULDN'T GO HOME WITH THE SCENERY.
IT'S NOT ABOUT THE SCENERY.
IT'S NOT ABOUT THE COSTUMES AND IT'S NOT ABOUT THOSE THINGS INDIVIDUALLY THAT COME TOGETHER FOR THE FULL SHOW.
>> TO SEE THE LATEST FROM THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES AT BGSU, FIND OUT ON INSTAGRAM AT ART SIDE BGSU.
♪ ♪ >> LADY NATASHA FINES WAS WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY AFTER PITCHING HER IDEAS AND GET TURNED DOWN EACH TIME THE TAMPA RESIDENT CHOSE TO DO IT HERSELF.
NOW SHE'S DESIGNING CLOTHING FOR PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT ABILITIES AND NEEDS, COMBINING FUNCTION WITH HIGH ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> I HAD BEEN A BRAND IN GENERAL MY WHOLE LIFE.
I'VE ALWAYS LOVED FASHION, BUT I WANTED TO MAKE SURE IT WAS SENDING A MESSAGE.
WE ARE DOING THIS FOR A PURPOSE, BUT I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS SO MANY YEARS GO BY AND THEN BEING THAT I WAS ALREADY WORKING AS A BUYER IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY, THE STARS ALIGNED, IN A WAY WHERE THAT LIGHT BULB MOMENT OF THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY OF THE BRAND I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO DO, BUT THIS IS A MESSAGE THAT WE CAN MAKE HAPPEN WITH THIS BRAND IS MAKING SURE EVERYONE IS SHOW CASED IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY EVEN IF YOU HAVE AN ILLNESS OR DISABILITY.
>> WHEN SHE STARTED SHOWING ME SOME OF HER DESIGNS, AND I'M, LIKE, OH, MY GOD!
I NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT, BUT THE REACTION THAT IT HAD, I'M SURE EVERYBODY ELSE HAS, BECAUSE NOBODY THINKS ABOUT A DISABILITY UNLESS YOU HAVE IT.
♪ ♪ ♪ >> I WAS VERY CLOSE WITH MY AUNT.
SHE ENDED UP PASSING THIS FEBRUARY, AND SHE IS THE AUNT WHO ACTUALLY INSPIRED THE BRAND.
SHE WAS IMMEDIATELY DIAGNOSED WITH STAGE 4 CANCER SIX YEARS AGO, SO IMMEDIATELY YOU SEE THAT THERE IS A CHANGE OF EMOTION, OF COURSE.
THERE IS A CHANGE OF HOW YOU DO THINGS AND WHAT YOU CAN DO AND WHAT YOU CAN WEAR.
I NOTICED THAT WHEN SHE WAS GOING THROUGH HER CHEMO TREATMENTS THAT THE FUN, BUBBLY OUTFITS THAT SHE WOULD WEAR.
SHE LOVED PINK AND IT IMMEDIATELY WAS NEUTRAL AND THEN VERY BORING TYPE OF OUTFITS IN ORDER TO BE COMFORTABLE AT THE HOSPITAL BECAUSE THERE WAS NOTHING AVAILABLE FOR HER.
THERE'S NOTHING AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET THAT'S FASHION FORWARD AND ALSO FUNCTIONAL FOR SOMEONE THAT HAS AN ILLNESS.
SOMEONE LIKE HER DOESN'T HAVE TO SACRIFICE WHO SHE IS AND WHAT SHE LOVES BECAUSE OF WHAT HAPPENED TO HER.
AND THE BRAND IS ALSO REFLECTING WHO SHE WAS.
KIND-HEARTED, COURAGEOUS, BRAVE AND YOU CAN STILL SHOW OFF YOUR FUN, FUNKY, FASHION PERSONALITY, AS WELL.
>> SHE'S DEFINITELY THE ARTIST.
WE ARE BOTH VERY PASSION AT.
WE ARE LATINAS.
WE HAVE THAT IN US, BUT SHE HAD A CLEAR VISION AND FOR ME, IT WAS --I NEEDED TO HELP HER WITH MY EXPERIENCE IN THE CORPORATE WORLD.
I KNEW THAT SHE WAS INTO SOMETHING, AND I HAD TO SUPPORT HER, AND I COULD NOT BE ANY MORE ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> I WOULD ACTUALLY PUT TOGETHER POWERPOINTS AND PRESENTATIONS FOR MY BOSSES AND MY TEAMS THAT I WORKED FOR IN THE INDUSTRY, AND I SHOWED THEM THERE'S SUCH A BIG OPPORTUNITY HERE FOR BEAUTIFUL WOMEN TO BE SHOWCASED AND ALSO REPRESENTED AND HAVE A CATEGORY OF CLOTHES THAT WE DON'T REALLY SEE RID GHT NOW, AND UNFORTUNATELY, THEY SAID THIS IS NOT OUR CUSTOMER.
LONG STORY SHORT, I COULD NOT JUST SIT THERE AND NOT DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
SO I QUIT MY JOB IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY.
I MOVED BACK HOME AND FINALLY I RAN INTO ONE MANUFACTURER AND SHE BELIEVED IN THE VISION AND THE BRAND, AND THAT'S HOW WE GOT OUR FIRST COLLECTION DONE WHICH WAS FINALLY IN JANUARY 2023, I RECEIVED OUR FIRST SAMPLES.
♪ ♪ ♪ >> ADAPTIVE CLOTHING IS WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR BASIC PIECES THAT EVERYONE ELSE WEARS.
THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THERE'S A LITTLE EXTRA LOVE THAT'S PUT INTO THE PIECES AND THEY HAVE ACCESSIBLE FEATURES AND ANYBODY CAN WEAR IT.
IT'S UNIVERSALLY DESIGNED TO WEAR.
EVEN I HAVE TROUBLE AND I DON'T HAVE A PHYSICAL DISABILITY, BUT PUTTING ON MY PANTS SOMETIMES I'M JUMPING UP AND DOWN AND THERE'S NO NEED FOR THAT.
IT'S FASHION FORWARD WITH FUNCTIONALITY AND ACCESSIBLE FEATURES ON THE PIECES THAT IS EASIER FOR SOMEONE TO PUT IT ON IF THEY NEED A LITTLE EXTRA HELP.
>> THEY DON'T LOOK AT US PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES OR WHEELCHAIR USERS.
THEY LOOK AT ABLE BODIES, YOU KNOW?
EASY TO STAND UP AND TO PUT PANTS ON.
NOT FOR ME.
IT TAKES FIVE MINUTE FOR ME TO PUT PANTS ON.
I HAVE TO LEAN BACK AND MOVE TO THE SIDE AND IT'S A WHOLE ORDEAL AND THE ZIPPERS AND THE MAGNETS, AND I CAN JUST ZIP IT ON, AND IT MAKES LIFE SO MUCH EASIER.
>> WHEN IT'S EASIER FOR ME TO PUT SOMETHING ON IT MAKES ME FEEL GOOD ABOUT MYSELF.
GRANTED, THESE CLOTHES ARE AMAZING AND LOOK AMAZING, BUT IT TAKES ME TEN MINUTES TO PUT SOMETHING ON, I'M NOT GOING TO FEEL AS GOOD ABOUT WEARING IT BECAUSE I'M OUT OF BREATH NOW.
I JUST DID A WOKOUT TO PUT THESE CLOTHES ON.
I GO THROUGH STRUGGLES IN MY DAILY DAY, SO IF IT'S AS SIMPLE AS ZIPPING SOMETHING UP AND TO DO THE CRAWL TO PUT SOMETHING ON.
IT'S AMAZING.
>> BECAUSE OF SOME OF THE CONDITIONS THAT I HAVE, IT'S A NEEDLE IN MY CHEST.
FIRST, I DO LIKE TO SAY THAT I AM CURRENTLY IN HER JACKET AND I LOVE HER JACKET BECAUSE EVEN IF I HAVE IT ZIPPED HERE AND EVEN IF I HAVE TO DO MEDICATION WHICH I HAVE TO DO AFTER MY INTERVIEW, I DON'T HAVE TO EXPOSE MY WHOLE CHEST TO THE WORLD.
I CAN JUST PULL THIS PART DOWN AND PULL MY LINE OUT, DO MY MEDICATION AND PUT IT BACK.
SO WHEN I DID, ACTUALLY, SEE HER BRAND, AND I SAW THAT AND I WAS, LIKE, IMMEDIATELY, I NEED TO BUY THIS.
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> I GET TO BRING IN THAT FUN DOPAMINE-BOOSTING TYPE OF COLORS AND EXCITEMENT TO THE CLOTHES.
YOU'RE EXPRESSING WHO YOU ARE AND HOW YOU WANT THE WORLD TO KIND OF SEE YOU.
THAT'S USUALLY THE FIRST IMPRESSION SOMEONE GETS IS OFF OF YOUR OUTFIT AND I ALWAYS THINK IT IS SO IMPORTANT THAT YOU'RE ABLE TO BE FULLY YOU EVEN IF SOMETHING HAS HAPPENED.
>> I ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO SEE HER THRIVE.
IT'S ART.

LIKE WE DID JUST DID NEW YORK FASHION WEEK AND THERE WERE LITTLE GIRLS IN THE AUDIENCE.
SO I GENUINELY THAT WITH OUR BRAND WE'RE OPENING DOORS, THAT THERE ARE MORE DESIGNERS LIKE MYSELF.
