The story of the Winged Victory of Samothrace sculpture at the Ohio State Thompson Library

Shortly after Thompson Library opened on Ohio State University’s campus in 1913, a towering statue in honor of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, took her place as a quiet sentry among the readers. Fifty years later, with the renovation of the library, a new replica was commissioned and in 2009 the Winged Victory sculpture made her triumphant return to the library’s reading room.
