We were talking about this when you guys first came in about Italian folk that you have, you know, the Godfather music I guess is...a way to.
Mike> Yeah.
I mean it's... yeah it's definitely music you would hear it here in those in those movies.
Yeah.
There's a whole tradition of, of Italian folk music that I didn't know about when I started playing the mandolin I started playing the mandolin when I was in college, I was 19 when I got a mandolin.
I was thinking Bill Monroe and Bluegrass.
And of course that's what I ended up doing.
But also my grandfather, his...his parents, my great grandparents were from Sicily, and he played the violin and he played me a song on his violin that was a mazurka, which is a type of waltz, you know, And, and I was like, Whoa, that just kind of blew me away.
And I realized there's this whole kind of music on this instrument, the mandolin.
It's the most Italian of all instruments.
And there's this other music that was written for this instrument and started doing a lot of research.
And I and I immediately roped Barrett into this project with him because it's sort of semi classical.
It's folk music, but you sort of have to have a classical background a little bit to understand it and play it.
Jack> Have you recorded?
You did an album, I think, right?
We finally made a record during... >> Yeah.
Mike> during the lockdown period, there in 2020.
We had the time finally because we're the band, you know, usually we're, we're so busy with the band, it's hard to do other musical projects, which is, you know, a great thing that the band is so, so busy.
But when the band was off the road for a couple of years, you know, we all kind of jumped into different little musical projects at home.
Jack> Did you do it on dropbox or did you violate lockdown.
Mike> Well, I think it was in early 2021.
So I was getting a feeling things were feel better, vaccines were available, people were getting out more.
You know I think we did wear masks.
Barrett> Did we?
>>Probably while we recorded it, Barrett> Yeah.
>> But we did it in this guy's basement, basically, who has a studio in his basement over in Black Mountain, North Carolina.
But yeah, it was great to finally make a record of that because we've been working on for so many years and had an opportunity to do it.
Jack> I understand you have a festival called Bird Fest that you do every year.
Tell us about that.
When is that going to happen?
Barrett> It's a South Carolina festival.
We headline it and we basically curate the festival and we bring out a great lineup of colleagues of ours that we think put on a good show.
Yeah, people come and camp out.
It's kind of close to Manning, South Carolina.
You could say, Jack> Oh wow.
Barrett> Summerton, South Carolina, even closer, Jack> - not too hot at that point in time.
Barrett> We it's...it's right on the border.
You know it can be but it typically you know, it's early May it's... it's not July.
It's not June.
It's not August.
So yeah typically the work the weather is pretty good and it's a beautiful site.
Jack> How many days?
Just two days?
It's two days, yeah.
And it's...there's a partnership with the South Carolina Waterfowl Association who have a beautiful facility down there in that area.
It's like this this secret spot that we're trying to let people know about South Carolina Wildlife Education Center.
And we, we do it right nearby, beautiful lakes and upstate.
And they have a festival for a few days.
Jack> How many day, how many times have you done this festival, so far?
Barrett> Well, this... this is the second year that we've done it at this site.
It's a festival that was in a different venue for years and years.
I mean, this is this will be this might even be the 20th year coming up that we've done it.
Jack> So it wasn't your festival before, Barrett> It was my festival.
Jack> It was your festival Barrett> and now... and now it's not really so much my festival anymore, We, we put it on the band and and also the South Carolina Waterfowl Association is that's, it's as much their festival as anybody.
Jack> Who would you like to see?
I don't know if you booked anybody, but Barrett> I don't know, you know, maybe the Rolling Stones, Taylor Swift.
