And we are speaking to Steep Canyon Rangers We have Aaron.
We have Barrett.
We have Mike who are joining us today at the Anne Springs Close Greenway in Fort Mill celebrating the 50th anniversary of South Carolina Public Radio.
Thanks for joining us.
Barrett> Thanks for having us.
Jack> When I spoke to Barrett in 2016, you were the new guy.
Barrett> Mm hmm.
That's right.
Jack> I guess you were getting hazed at that point.
Now we've got another new guy.
Barrett> Yep.
Jack> Who is Aaron?
Barrett> Yep.
Jack> Tell me how you hazed Aaron.
(laughing) Aaron> Well, it's, you know, it's a tough enough gig that I felt pretty well hazed just showing up.
(laughing) Jack> So there was a, I guess your first trial by fire was quite interesting.
Where was that?
Aaron> It was the Hollywood Bowl...We... Jack> We didn't try in some backwoods club.
We tried you at the Hollywood Bowl... Aaron> Well, actually, there was one night in front of about 5 or 6000 at Stanford the night before.
So yeah, that was the backwoods inconsequential gig.
Jack> Was that with Steve and Martin?
Aaron> It was.
It was.
Jack> They played with Steve Martin and Martin Short and some of your dates, about a third of them are with those two?
Aaron> Something like that.
Yeah.
Jack> How different is it playing for them than it is doing a show with just you guys?
Mike> It was a lot a lot more music in our show.
And it's a comedy show that they do.
Jack> Right.
>> That incorporates music.
And obviously when they do the music, when Steve does his banjo portion of the show, we're the band and they let us do a couple of songs of our own in the show, too.
It's a lot of fun.
Jack> Now we've seen Steve playing banjo ever since he, you know, wild and crazy guy days.
How did Steve Canyon hook up with Steve?
How did that end up coming to be?
Mike> So we actually knew his wife before they were married She was a friend of ours and she lived in New York City and we used to go to New York.
You know, like through the years and play shows up there.
And...and she would always come to the shows.
And one time we even crashed on her apartment floor early on in our career.
And I remember one of the last times we went up there, she said, "Yeah, I'm dating Steve Martin."
And we were like, "Oh, really?
Like, "Steve Martin, Steve Martin?"
Jack> Yeah, right.
Mike> And she said, you know, he plays the banjo and you guys should play together some time.
And so, her family likes to vacation in Brevard, North Carolina, where I live.
And so she actually brought him down to Brevard one year.
This would have probably been in like 2008, I think, something like that.
And in our old guitar player, Woody and I went over to the house that they were staying in and had a little dinner and played some music with him afterwards.
And then he had just released or was about to release his album The Crow , which is his first all music record he'd made, and it's in many years.
And his agent said, "Well, you've got to go on the road now" "and promote this new record."
"And so you either need to hire a bunch of musicians "from Nashville or something, "or you need to, you know, take a band out as your band."
He said, "Well, I only know one band."
(Jack laughs) And that was us.
Shortly after that, after I had met him, we went to New York City and played our own show and invited him to come sit in with us and we played The Crow , I remember.
And he said, "That song's never sounded better."
And that's kind of how... that's kind of how it started.
(applause) Band member> Make him welcome on the guitar here.
He's the newest member of the Steep Canyon Rangers, and he's from just down the road here.
He's from Saluda, North Carolina.
(applause) Oh, yeah, they all came.
Aaron> Saluda contingency is out, apparently.
Band member> Make him welcome here to Fort Mill here tonight.
This is Mr. Aaron Burdette right here on the guitar, y'all.
Aaron> Hey, thanks very much.
(applause) (guitar tuning) Audience member> Tell us a story.
Aaron> All right, I'll tell the story.
So it's been about a year that I've been playing with these fellows.
We actually did an interview earlier today and I was reminded that they called me about mid-June... and July 4th, they decided to try me out on a run out at the Hollywood Bowl in, well...Hollywood.
That's a pretty big bowl right there.
Biggest bowl I had been in.
It was a very, very quick.
It was very quick.
Let's just say that.
And so after it was one of the Steve Martin tours and we went to a party, a pool party at one of the musician's houses up in the hills on a Sunday afternoon.
And we drove up there and everybody knew I was the new guy.
Everybody knew there was a new guy walking around, "Watch out."
So I go to the door and his wife answered the door and I said, "Hey, I'm Aaron.
I'm here for the pool party."
And she said, "Oh, you're Aaron."
You're the fellow that jumps in the deep end.
I said, "Yes, I am."
This song is called Deep End.
