It's an intrastate showdown between the Iowa state cyclones and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Hello, everyone.
I'm Tim Johnson, and welcome to our season debut of college wrestling, our 27th season on Iowa public Television.
And it's always a pleasure to welcome my broadcasting partner, Hall of Famer Dan Cable.
Dan, are you pumped up?
Hey, I'm always pumped up about this sport, but I've been trying to get out there and generate everybody be pumped up about it.
So that's what I'm working on right now.
Every year, the Iowa State, Iowa dual meet is one we should be pumped up.
But the last 15 years, Iowa has dominated in the dorm.
Well, I tell you, Coach Douglas has been in Iowa 15 years or so, and he just not quite that long.
But he hasn't won a dorm yet.
But they have beaten Iowa at a more crucial time.
Well, let's talk about that time last year.
Second place in the nation.
Right past Iowa, they finished second, the nation with three national champions.
I'll tell you, it's all about peaking.
And as you can see there, they're right up there.
They were in the runner up spot.
But I'll tell you, during the year, they weren't quite that good.
So Coach Douglas picked them, Right.
Well, let's talk about Coach Douglas.
30 years in the sport as a head wrestling coach.
He was an Olympic wrestler and a coach.
He's a great one.
I'll tell.
He's an ambassador for the sport.
I'm telling you, I've been trying to get him out of that coaching room a little bit to help him promote the sport.
But right now he's got his work cut out with a lot of new guys.
So he hasn't really kept up with what's going on out there.
So I kind of get in his ear a little bit.
Well, he's got a zero on in his team.
And when you have a national champion coming back, that helps.
While Holker certainly is a funky wrestler, he's a national champion.
And every time he goes out there, he's a very exciting wrestler.
So he's one that you have to prepare for.
Well, speaking of preparing, it looks like Coach Jimmy Zaleski in his sixth year at Iowa has prepared the Hawkeyes well, a big gap so upset over Minnesota already this year.
Well, he may have that upset, but then the next week he went to a tournament where Oklahoma State was, and I don't think he felt that good.
So he's looking for consistency.
And today will be one of those days that he's looking for that.
Well, consistency is brought about by returning All-Americans.
Luke Eustace is one of Jim Zaleski.
He's great wrestlers.
There's Jim right there, Jim in his sixth season.
And like you said, Jim has brought the Hawkeyes up to second place in the in the polls.
But there's Luke Eustace, £125 or maybe the best in the nation.
Well, I tell you, I watched practices last year and I didn't even know this guy was that good.
And he finished second.
The Nation was because he wasn't practicing that much.
But you know what?
He is practicing a lot this year, so look for a lot from him.
Well, let's look to see what legendary another legendary wrestler and coach our broadcast partner, Jim Gibbons, has to say.
Well, tell him thank you.
And when you focus on this rivalry, it's really easy to take your focus on the 29 straight wins that I was had over the 15 or 16 years.
But there has been a few times during that streak where Iowa State's been able to steal the momentum of the national tournament like the last year, where they finished second in the country.
But this year, momentum is back on the Hawkeye side.
Two out of three Iowa State national champions are gone.
And the guy who's probably going to do the job stealing the momentum back for the Hawkeyes is Steve Marco.
And here you see Steve.
Marco.
He had a problem last year opening up, but now with new coaching staff in the room there, as far as Roy Royce are helping him out, I think you're going to see a much more aggressive Steve Marco and probably a more exciting meet, more exciting brand of wrestling.
Back to you.
Tim, Thank you.
I'd like for us to pause for a special moment to listen to the incomparable Doug Brown.

Well let's get to the rest of the match ups here you have Nakamura at 125 versus Lucas Roberson for Iowa State versus Cliff Moore you have that 141 either Aaron Walker returning national champion against Luke Moffatt or Nate GARLICK against Ty Eustis and Mattson and Anderson at 157.
I over the next MM POS Alonzo 165 versus Jason D'Agata Cook at 174 versus Tyler Nick's Palmer versus Smith and Milford at full and at heavyweight here you'll see Joe Brewer against DeMarco.
Back to you, Tim.
Thanks, Jim.
And we're getting ready to go at 125.
You're looking at the math there and the loop.
Eustace and Grant, not the mural.
And the official is Keith Pullman from Charles City, Nakamura from Hawaii, a state champion from Hawaii, a freshman, and off to a pretty good start.
Eustace He's one tough nail.
Well, he certainly is.
Like I said, I guy was NCAA runner up last year as a as a sophomore.
Had put a little time in in the room to get in the lineup.
He had put a couple of years in there, but he certainly did a great job for the Hawks at the end of the season.
And I'll tell you, he was in a motorcycle wreck at the first part of last season and had a shoulder bad shoulder most of the year.
So he didn't get to train as much.
But he got he got the shoulder operated on and the physician did a did a great job.
Well, Nakamura is a good freshman, a redshirt freshman.
He's done reasonably well so far because as a freshman, he's already got a pretty big win over Mario Stewart from Lehigh, a former all-American.
And that's a good that's a good win for him.
We're well, there's a takedown for Nakamura.
It's kind of a Russian spin there.
And it caught him off guard.
But that's part of the game.
That's two for Nakamura from Iowa State, and he's on top, riding the defending national finalist and top ranked Luke Eustace.
That's why we wrestle the matches.
Is the first takedown of the match of Iowa State and obviously a big test for the Iowa State.
Young man, the freshman here in Carver.
Hawkeye has to be a pretty tough place to come.
I understand.
We know we're starting at 125 and up.
You might.
There's a new rule this year that allows the coaches to start at 125.
However, they did draw and they still drew 125.
So, you know, I think it should start at 125.
There's one to come down to the heavyweights.
You know, we eventually want to just get rid of the rule, I think, and get back to 125.
It's just a lot more coaching angles that you can use in preparation from from our sport.
And our sport needs.
All the promotion you can get right now.
We don't need to take coaching decisions out.
That was one escape and two for a takedown that puts Eustace from Iowa up 3 to 2.
This this is where I think Eustace is is probably, you know, more mature beyond his years.
Is just being a sophomore, is it?
He's just really tough on the top position.
He does a lot of nice risk rides and did a lot of good tough riding in the NCAA tournament last year, actually as a junior, but did some great riding in the NCAA tournament last year to keep him in the answers.
Eustace is from a great wrestling family, right?
Dan certainly is some blue Earth Minnesota and he has a brother on the team at 149 and his dad was the wrestling coach there and he was a great wrestler himself.
And I'll tell you, he he has the skills from all positions.
You know, there's not a position that he's really not strong at.
And that's one of the things that's unusual about kids today.
A lot of times they don't have maybe a writing skill like that.
Well, there was a stalemate called by Keith Kuhlman, the official, a longtime friend of ours on Iowa Public television.
And often we see Keith from Charles City, a former national champion for northern Iowa himself as a wrestler, 333201.
He hears that same position and not more was able to score it on the two on one and yeah, he's pretty wily here.
He's got some nice counters here.
Dan Yeah he did that.
Picked that good flexibility there, Good flexibility, real good.
Okay.
The number comes out in a lot better position uses.
Wow they call it illegal hold.
Yeah believe that I don't know that Wow that was a quick tell you what he just touch it and he gave it 1.4 Iowa state wrestler knock on fire that's called head scissors.
Yeah I think the guy realized that he wasn't supposed to do it as soon as he touched.
He can't.
Very least, I don't know.
I would have.
I guess it's the correct call, but sometimes you use your own judgment.
Yeah.
It's not like he was using the guy's head, so it went for use to us against Nakamura, but it was technically the correct call 4 to 3 going into the second period.
Now, the Iowa wrestler ahead.
Use this over Nakamura.
He's got to clear that wrist of Nakamura.
Going to turn him get some back points there.
I'll tell you one thing about moving the bottom.
When you move on the bottom, if you don't have control, your wrist, you're very vulnerable for four tilts.
And that's what a lot of things about Hulk hit.
That was a great combination escape going right back to a takedown.
Now I don't know he did he get a reversal or escape in a take they get to it he's got one end to it just like that first period.
He's done that twice now and very impressive.
Yeah.
That's something that you just you really it's in you, you know, it's like brands used to do that so well and you have to drill it in practice too.
You've got to be thinking, if you want to get an escape here, I'm going to come right back in and attack and see what's there.
Do you really caught Nakamura off guard?
We're at Carver Hawkeye and Iowa City with their big dual meet between Iowa State and Iowa, the first match of the afternoon and 125.
I'm Tim Johnson.
Along with Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons.
Here's a replay escape.
Good hand control.
Come right back, Pop.
Just had to cut the corner real good.
Good head, good head setup.
And you end up right on both ankles and you see Nakamura's position there.
He had a shoe laces flat.
And when you have your shoelaces flat like that, it's real tough to get explode forward and react of a shot there by Nakamura.
But it was also a half hearted shot.
And it looks like you just not only gets to two, but he's breaking.
He's breaking.
The young freshman from Hawaii, Grant Nakamura, he's got him in a pinning situation here.
But, you know, it's a tough it's a tough the Pentagon, especially for the flexible guy.
But you tell us a lot of pain on the guy.
You can see on the face there.
Well, we know already that the keep it legal, keep it across.
You don't drive it straight forward.
You're perfectly fine.
You got to take it across and then it's perfectly fine.
But the referee has to watch it a little bit.
But he's doing a pretty good job.
It's gotten closer, but you can tell that Nakamura has got a lot of flexibility.
Flexible.
Well, if people would be over there, it's getting close.
You look at his pain expression on his face there, you know that that's got to hurt because you know, already know how flexible that Nakamura is.
Oh, it says something about you as a competitor, too.
I mean, that guy was not going over Grant Nakamura getting in a lot of pain.
You just put him in a world of hurt.
He's got he has a ahead 9 to 4 after two periods.
He's got a minute, one right in time, hurt his ankle a little bit.
We got to take an injury time, but we got to talk to Justis earlier, asked him about coming back.
It was tough.
I mean, you just got to be able to go out there.
You know, every time you step out and compete, you got to be able to put yourself in that mindset.
Just being able ready to go and know that the days that you did put in the training, maybe it wasn't every day, the week, but the days that you did, you put in 110% and you got the most out of practice.
And then, you know, when it's time to compete, it's time to compete.
And you get ready and you get up for it, you get ready to go down.
That had to be one of the best kept secrets last year about about Justis being hurt.
I mean, I wasn't aware, I mean that that he was in better shape as he was after that accident.
Sometimes these things got to stay inside the wrestling room.
And I tell you, you just that's part of being a good program.
And they were able to keep that out all year.
So what does it say for his concentration, you know, being out most of the season and not getting I think this kid is one of the most mentally tough kids that I've been associated with in a long time.
It's just tough just to see what he's done and to see what he's doing again right now.
So I really I really think it's in his mind he can affect the whole team a lot and so can Michael.
So they're kind of like bookends.
So in between they've got to do some building yet.
But he's not a perfect wrestler by any means.
But you know he sure as a competitor yeah there was an escape given to Nakamura by Justis to begin the third period and then a takedown for use just and then an escape again for Nakamura Justis letting taking him down, letting him up its 11 to 6 in favor of Justis for Iowa and this first match here between Iowa and Iowa State.
I think one of the things that he's doing well, Justis is that when he's getting in on these shots, he's got a flexible wrestler and a guy could end up in a lot of stalemates, but he's actually turned the corner, staying at the knees and below knee to an ankle, ankle and ankle.
And so far at two or three, the takedowns have been exactly like that.
I'll tell you, that goes it gives a lot of credit to Sanderson, Karl Sanderson, who used to who just showed so many people how to eliminate counters and takedown.
So I see it going worldwide right now.
And again, this is one of these situations that really he has to struggle and has to work hard.
But if he comes up, he's going to have to keep the ankle and he's going have to go to the far knee or below the ankle to make it work.
So, yeah, he went on the waist, but he got the hand pulse, but he had to work a little bit harder than normally.
Two points for Justis it makes the score 13 to 6 with the writing time.
He does have a major decision.
That's one extra point would be four for Iowa, but he lets it go for an escape.
You take down.
Come on.
That's too long to go in the match here.
40 seconds to write the guy out thinking that he needs some action.
His coach Solecki, also says entertainment.
So he right now he's thinking that we got to you know, we just can't hang on.
We've got to try to win the way Coach Solecki wants me to win.
Well, that's the way you want him to think, too, from an entertainment sport standpoint of the sport.
Right.
Right.
And there's the shot that's, you know, that could end up scoring the extra point or, you know, I don't know.
It's it's he's going to have to us going to have to hurry.
There's only about 14 seconds to go.
It's going to have to get that arm across the far side.
And he did.
And there's the two right there.
So looking for more.
But it's going up.
The time is going to run out.
The major decision is going to happen.
And then he puts it in and he got hurt.
Didn't take it long, did it?
That's right.
And he goes two more points at least.
We'll see.
He gets to make it 17 win writing time, 18 to 7 Press four points for Iowa.
Big win.
There's the crowd likes it.
That's one thing.
I like it.
Crowd gets excited.
I say there's nothing better than the people getting up.
And they love that kind of wrestling excitement the whole time.
Well, the other thing too, Dan, I'm impressed with Nakamura being a freshman little boy.
He came in here, presented himself.
I mean, that's a you know, we want the of the opponent out there when you're being outclassed to go out there and, you know, present yourself out of college at all.
Yeah.
You know, one injury time.
But he had his ankle actually legitimately hurts a little bit so I think that's I think you're both talking about something that's real important.
I thought he was in the match then when it was obvious that he wasn't at the talent level.
His skill level at this time, he still thought if he made two shots there at the end of the period, he presented himself, okay, we're ready for £133.
Cliff Moore and Zach Roberson brought more from Iowa for Roberson from Iowa State.
This is the match, I'll tell you for both teams really trying to advance the wrestler.
They're both All-Americans, I believe.
Yes.
And I'll tell you what, both sides need a win just to try to bring their guys to a new level, trying to think of that they're the best in the country.
So this is a very important match just from an individual point of view.
Well, it wasn't even the team.
Moore started out the year with a big win up at Minnesota and then a struggled since and he only has a 500 record really right now Roberson coming along with a little better record this year and like you said, Dan two All-Americans going after it and I think both of them are trying to work through injuries they've had more, hasn't been exactly healthy all through his career.
And I know Roberson hasn't been either, So they've kind of been in that best of the risk category that you look at that £33 weight classes, maybe being a two man weight class naturally and nationally.
And and these guys have been kind of in that 5 to 8 range as far as rankings for a long time.
And really trying to step up and move to the next level and compete maybe for a top spot.
Well, let's cut through it, guys.
What you're saying is this is a big match for Iowa State is well, look at this.
No question about wow, he did a good job of coming out of there.
Iowa State hit a nice near and far legs.
Moore was in a position to get put on his back and he did a good job of was flexibility.
You know I think with this one our way and you know some of these matches are a little bit you know the guy recuperates a little bit and how he was able to prepare himself physically and mentally.
I think that our way it needs to go to an hour and a half just because you really owe it to the athletes to give them a little bit of a chance to to prepare more.
I think that's what it's about.
It's about the athletes.
As long as you get the sport safe from a weight loss point of view, which I feel that we have put we have put our athletes under a lot more safety now than we got to start thinking about what we can do for performance.
And that's one of those things that I think they're out a little bit quicker than they normally would be if they could really prepare for as far as warm up and focus on the individuals here.
Some of their some of their matches have been early, early on, decided by some things that they should not focus.
Yeah, I'm not Matt Savage, a little more than one minute left in the first period were at £133, the second match of the meet between Iowa and Iowa State Cliff Moore versus Zach Roberson.
Going back to your point down, it's all we're asking for is a drink of water another half hour.
Yes, that's it.
Just the standpoint of electing a guy, making sure he's loose so there's don't get injured and, you know, it takes a while to focus.
I mean, you were a national champion, you know, and, you know, you just can't jump off the scales even if there's no weight loss.
You just that's that's a disqualifier.
So what you do is you get to focus on Roberson for another half hour.
And that's that's about what you need.
You need a good 90 minutes.
I'm telling you, at that level, it makes a difference.
ROBERSON is a junior, as is Moore.
Roberson was a four time Kansas State champion and undefeated and Moore is a from Dubuque, Iowa, Hempstead.
And he was also a third team all-American in high school and a prep champion, three time champions out of the U.S. state edge on the air.
I haven't seen a lot of action in this period.
You know, I think, again, I think that's part of the the 60 Minutes, just not quite being warmed up.
No points.
There's two right there.
Right on the buzzer.
Right on the buzzer.
Two points takedown for Roberson at the end puts him ahead to do nothing as he's going to the second period.
What do you get for right dunk he's got to have something down maybe not maybe a half a second look beautiful just slow down Yeah comes around and then what he does well as he gets into post his hands real quick against knees and below.
Yeah.
Boy, that's the only way it works.
Here to come.
Upper body, low takedown.
Good point.
You're listening to Dan Gable, Jim Gibbons, both national champions as wrestlers and coaches.
So Iowa Public Television is college wrestling.
You can throw up and I think is real comfortable in his tie up here.
He's got double inside and that's the first time he lost it there.
But Roberson's inside.
Now he's outside with that right hand.
There's not a lot of action here.
They're both kind of heavy on their feet right now, just as far as sluggish.
You know, I just think that they're they're not they're not prepared to wrestle right now.
30 seconds into full blast, period.
And an escape for Moore closes the gap to 2 to 1 in favor of Roberson from Iowa State.
Come on.
This is a situation here where Moore has an advantage here.
He's got a double underhook He's got to make something happen from this tie.
Wow.
Both kind of moving slow, but they're reacting again.
I am able to watch him.
That's what I don't like it.
It's kind of like slow motion.
Yeah.
And you look at that.
I think that's all part of the plan to switch off to.
That should be a takedown.
And he gets the two and it takes more ahead.
For the first time, 3 to 2, the Iowa Hawkeye goes out in front, 3 to 2 with 45 seconds left in the second period.
This is a big stage in this match here with 45 seconds left.
In the second period, you would expect more probably to stay aggressive at the top position, not give up the escape.
Well, speaking of expectations, we expect a bad setup, but he might end up coming out of it.
All right.
But no, he he end up sitting out and not getting back into him and he kind of put himself in jeopardy a little bit.
But but one, again, there's a real critical 15 seconds here for Iowa State, trying to get that escape hustle across the court after tough ride.
10 seconds, tough ride after the takedown advantage.
He's going to have about four almost 50 seconds of riding time.
We're talking about Cliff Moore after the take.
Yeah, we're going into the third period.
It's 3 to 2.
Oh, guys, it's France, Tommy, France, over there.
There's that high cross, right?
He kept the corner pretty good.
He switched off, got his hands there.
That was key.
When you say cut the corner, you're looking at that right arm kind of coming across to get the second.
He actually needed to move a little bit further around with his body.
But you know how you got that corner pick.
That's why he could have done that.
There's another shot.
Wow.
He caught him in a flurry.
That was good action.
But it wasn't like a second.
It was a counter shot counter.
You caught him off guard.
There.
Well, Cliff Morris decided how to work through Roberson's ties here, and he's getting right in time.
It was getting more aggressive.
It looked like a bad shot, but came out of it.
Came out of it.
Well, kind of knocked up Roberson on his side.
Not a lot of energy there on the bottom, guys, getting his head down a bit, but he's still working there, still working, trying to cuts, not getting hand control.
Yeah, I'm not a real big fan of trying to get out from underneath when you post your head on the man.
Right, guys?
No, that's just a guy had a chance to stay behind the arms and stand behind the arms.
Here.
He's Here he is.
He cut there.
He got a little bit out of position, it looks like.
Roberson, but he follows him.
Great job of push with his head counter in a in a circular action by Moore.
That's what you're talking about reaction Look like Roberson was trying to get around to the outside there but that's people yeah is is Frank was trying to get his feet to move and they just didn't move and he fell to the side one minute left in the third period the score is 5 to 3 in favor of Moore for Iowa over Roberson from Iowa State.
We have less than a minute left in this very close match and he has a minute 50 right time.
So that's a big factor here, too.
That's an extra point.
You can't get rid of that, Right?
You know, and here's the point in the match here.
You see a parallel ride.
But what do you see?
The bottom man with his head on the mat, You know, the referee not going to call that usually for stalling on top.
I don't think he can move right now, though.
You know, he's under control.
He looks like he's trying.
It just looks like he's Elizabeth.
He's going to he's going to it looks like he's going to go for the fall here a little bit.
But at the same time, he could jeopardize whether he loses to him or not.
But the bottom man has to make a decision.
There's not much time.
Just let him right there or right now.
I mean, this is a big win for Moore.
He's going to do whatever it takes to win.
He moved his hips up.
Nice move back.
So I don't know who they're going to call here.
I don't think they can call the bottom back.
You guys stay on me as a good car.
Recall that you had a chance to get a reversal a near fall or something, which would only thing would give him the victory, I guess.
And let's look and see if Roberson takes his head to the mat.
That's coming up Friday.
There he goes again.
That's that's got to keep his hips under.
There's the he's he's moving without hand control there.
And that's going to be a pretty big win for the Hawks and Moore.
One chance he gave up to wow the score 7 to 3.
That's pretty quick for the three left four wins it over Zach Roberson for Iowa, big start for the Hawkeyes and they go out front seven zero.
I can tell right now that he needed another 30 minutes now Why?
Because you've got to be prepared mentally, physically, whatever.
And that's that kid.
He staggered a little bit.
One Coach Douglas said to me before the match lights up that he felt like, you know, they didn't know for sure they could win the meet.
But he felt like he was going to get his share of chance to win some matches.
And I'm sure that's one of them that he thought he had a chance.
And he actually did have a chance, but he didn't win it.
So that's it's a tough one for him.
Here we are at £141.
They're going hook Luke Moffat for Iowa versus Erin Hooker, the defending national champion for Iowa State.
It's going to be a big one.
And here's another one of those big opportunities for Iowa State.
Well, here's another one of these situations.
They weighed in two guys at 141.
And so it's going to be a disadvantage for which guy of a wrestler, 49 because he had to weigh in at 141, both of them.
And so that's another flaw in the rule a little bit.
But Arauz and Hogan would have like to wrestle 49 here, but it a chance with the other kid.
Russell 41 But with this with the close way and like that, it really affects a guy's a size advantage in it whereas the guy could a weight a couple more pounds more.
But it's one of those things we'll see what happens here.
Poker's the defending champion he did I think tech fall market last year.
So I'm sure that Iowa State's looking for big points here.
But at the same time, I know I was looking to do better than a tech fall from last year.
Well, we're not talking about any slouch.
We're talking about the Big Ten champion who pinned Minnesota's Chad Erickson last year.
Moffitt, he came on big time and just in time to win the Big Ten championship.
This very explosive wrestler from Estherville, Iowa.
Yeah, both wrestlers.
You know, we looked at this match last year.
It was a tossup.
We look at it as one of those toss up matches that either guy could have won.
But now, you know, one guy has a great Big Ten tournament and ends up being the champion.
And then Hofer had the outstanding national tournament being fifth in the country.
But, you know, between the two of these guys, you probably had more than a dozen losses.
It's kind of interesting because that means when they're hot, they're hot.
But streaky.
Yeah, I think Moffat was the Big Ten actually.
Outstanding roster, too.
Yeah.
And Aaron Hooker, a senior from Form Utah, he was a transfer.
He started at Brigham Young University and then transferred and sat out a year and was like this.
Look at this.
Wow.
And hopefully without a flurry.
Yeah, well, Martin thought he had him.
He let up a little bit.
But you don't help this guy.
He's a national champ till you have him.
Yeah, he's got pride right now.
He's got something to defend.
Now, here's where he beat him last year.
He wrote him.
Now, here's the key.
If he can.
If he can get that, that's what.
That's how he rode him last year without leg in.
Right leg in.
And Luke Holker off to a20 lead.
Now, with that takedown, you mentioned Orem, Utah, and that's where Utah Valley State College just started a Division one wrestling program for the first time in 31, 30 years I was out there.
It's not like they don't have any high school talent out there.
No, they had no place to go.
Here's the high crotch and now keeps his hips under good.
It looks like he's going to get trouble.
He just didn't knock him off his base there before.
He just both came off of a little bit.
He needed to knock it.
Lock up.
Yep.
Tape.
Still a table, that leg there.
Well, and then Walker did an excellent job of just changing directions with his attack.
No.
Well, he's.
He's the national champ.
He.
He has great hips.
He's using utilize working on Moffitt's right now.
Luke Moffitt, senior from Westerville, Iowa.
Guys said Big ten champion but did not place last year.
Right.
And in the next of matches this is the place that he got beat last year and this is the place he got beat last year.
He got a two point and right there, boy, he's calling quick, but he's consistent.
He's been doing it.
A team.
Fans didn't like it, but that's the way he's been calling it.
Yeah was the same call that Cliff Moore got as far as back point You know what I think it's a good call I did I think that was good call it put him on there you got to get some credit sometimes I'm 2 seconds are slow and they're too slow.
A lot of writing time being racked up by Hoke right now.
The position that you have to keep Holker out of this is where he's really tough.
Well, one way to get out of it is the end of the period which comes up to the end of the first period.
Iowa's choice.
And he's not going to choose down, I'll bet.
Here's the replay they gave him the two he rolls through, but he has the risk control and that's what makes the difference.
And he gets that to count real quick.
Basketball here for the Iowa deferred and holker shows down and here we go.
Caution on top.
He started before the referee, Keith Bowman's whistle on the afternoon where they're going.
But anyhow, that was a too big two big points.
But again, here's where Coker is pretty tough here.
He's loose and Bob came out of that actually looked like he should have been reversed.
Wow.
And he gets reversed.
Yeah, he's got that leg in right away.
I you know what?
I don't know what he's done in the last year as he worked on that side or not.
You know, I just like goes in automatically.
You know, you got to keep those legs out too.
Yeah.
So he's going for broke.
Now.
Coker goes out front six.
Oh, and now we got the other leg that's eight.
Oh and it looks like a replay from last year's dual meet.
So, you know, Luke is going to go for broke a little bit and he realizes now he's down anyway, going to win this match.
He's come back and score a bunch of points there.
He kept the leg coming in and he is very dangerous.
It's pretty difficult out scramble a guy who won a national championship as a scrambler.
You know that just he's putting himself in situations where he's constantly in a scramble and that's the whole class comfortable.
You look at him right now, he doesn't even look like he's breathing hooker on top and he's got his leg all up.
You're still down.
If he lets that leg come in, he has no chance.
It is a reversal real quick.
You just got to hit control.
He did a roll, but he got the hip control and the leg came right in.
He start holster free, scored one minute, 3 seconds left in the second period, scores eight zero and 2 minutes plus leg and riding time there is and these aren't the clingy type of legs.
These are the power legs where he's got his chest up high, his hips down low.
And he's it's very difficult for Moffitt to do anything.
Look at his butt, his arch in his lower back and his chest is up.
I mean, that that's just a tremendous amount of pressure down there on Moffitt's hips.
Now he needs what he needs to be doing right now, sliding his knee out by sliding forward into the left.
And that will put that knee out.
But right now, he's just kind of hanging in there, man.
You got a warning sign and now golfers going the other way with it.
Well, guys get dominated from that leg position.
And I tell you what, if you're talking to these young driven wrestlers and try to figure out what the most dominant wrestlers are, the guys that have the skills in this top position here.
Well, as far as man control, you're absolutely right.
And you can really break a guy's spirit here, you know, just because you control him so well.
We're just not riding either.
We're turnin work and control and it's a very proactive hip, hip attack.
Leg attack.
Yeah.
It's just not those clingy leg.
It's the power level.
Here we go.
A lot of man said 11 seconds left in the second period.
Score eight zero in favor of the Iowa State cyclones.
Aaron Hooker in last year's national champion at this same weight class, £141.
His right arm keeps going forward way too far, and that gives that leg ability to come right in.
He's got to go back in and you got to block with that right arm.
You got to actually look for it to pick up a leg.
And we are at the end of the second period just we talked to Hooker earlier.
We asked him to describe any pressure you feel as a returning champ.
They go, no, I don't think I'll ever feel his his pressure.
I think his is just something greater.
But, you know, I definitely feel more pressure from being a returning national champion.
I think everyone's watching that tape or I feel everyone's, you know, out to get me and stuff and I just have to work that much harder.
And I have just got to the match with look at them, look at this.
A little more energy that I had because I tell you, that's football in there.
This hooker can scramble.
He just came out of a a move that I haven't seen so many guys come out of.
He missed it.
There.
And we know anything can happen just last year.
Look at this.
He's still comfortable there.
I think he's going to lose a takedown there.
He still got that honor.
He's still competing in there.
He still got that army.
And I think Moffitt's afraid to go around behind him to give up his his position to bags.
He knows he's he's going to have to go to going to get in a scramble again and go action.
Wow he's flexible there he is strong has just been strong.
Wow.
Look at this.
Look at this.
I think that's what he look to see.
He's got his headgear over his eyes.
He don't need to see for field.
You just need to feel.
And he's coming around a better position now.
It looks like he's going to end up in there.
Still.
Look at this.
Two legged.
Yeah.
Wow.
Got the two points.
Wow.
Look at that same.
Whoa, whoa, Two more points to take down to four near Near-Fall makes the score 12 zero.
Cut it to 13 points on the board.
You know, Dan, I think Aaron's right.
You know what he says?
A lot of people do scouting him.
But you know what?
You have to go out there and actually field those positions with him.
If you're going to be able to do any damage against the vets.
One more point to the Iowa State Cyclones.
Yeah, I don't know if he can move and the guy's got the legs.
I tell you, I have to give credit to Moffitt.
He was rolling around to try to win the match.
And so I don't you know, I don't have the story, but the way he lost all the scrambles.
Yeah, he's over on the scramble 14 and nothing in favor of the defending national champion Aaron Holker overlook in that pretty cool customer.
And now at 149 a couple of redshirt freshman going against each other, Ty Eustace, the brother of Luke versus Nate.
You've got both of these wrestlers are very successful in high school.
Here we go.
This will be interesting, guys.
Motion.
Okay.
Alex had some early, early wins here and used his being the brother of Luke Eustace, the NCAA runner up we saw in our first match.
Gets him some skills and maybe two guys who are a lot like Moffitt and Hulk or were last year we don't really know much about.
This match may be probably one of the last few toss ups in the meet.
Well, Eustace is off to a slow start, but I was really high on him.
Right?
I mean, I mean, he's got a lot of potential here.
Yeah, he's he has to develop mentally, but he's had to go against look who he's had to go against Larkin, the number one wrestler, Minnesota's number one wrestler.
And he just the reason why I say Lark is number one, because he just beat Minnesota's national champion from last year at up at 149.
So here at Lawrence Jared Lawrence.
So you know, it's like he's had to wrestle these two guys are ready and you know, he hasn't been in the matches so much.
But I think it's more in his mind because other matches he's wrestled.
It's really come on, he's the kind of guy that I can tell you right now as the match goes on, if he feels like he can do something to, he'll really turn it up and beat you good.
But, you know, it just hasn't developed to the point where he comes out against anybody feeling like that.
I kept telling already, he just kind of feels his way through a little bit.
And Nate GARLICK is a natural one.
41 pounder, I believe.
He weighed in, weighed in at 41.
And so he's moving up a weight class here, which is another one of those unfair things about the way in rules that we have where you have to weigh in at the weight.
You you start at the beginning of the year out, then you can move up during the meet.
So I'm sure he would like to have a couple of extra pounds going into this match, especially since he's going to go there's no reason why he should know that he was going to play on him.
But I don't know if they knew what weight they were going to go, so they needed to.
Wolfe weigh in at 141.
But if they if they had the chance to to maybe weigh a couple more pounds, you know, that would have given Iowa State a little bit more advantage to put a guy at the same weight class he had 49.
So, you know, it's one of those things that, you know, we just in the future, once people feel more comfortable about the weight loss situation in wrestling, that's got to give a lot more freedom because the the bottom line is the sport should be controlled more by the the people that know the sport as far as being able to promote it.
And, you know, we need input from experts, but we also need to have our weight cut a little bit too.
Well, people have gone through the process or experts to over wrestle.
Yeah, absolutely no point scored here.
35 seconds left in the first period at zero zero between Eustace from Blue Earth, Minnesota, and Gaelic from Tucson, Arizona.
Speaking of somebody mentioned comfort, I wonder if he's getting comfortable with the weather.
Of course, Eustace would be used to this cold and he has the double leg to drive it.
He likes it, right?
Wow.
What hits he You know what he did, though?
He came up.
He needed to drop down to the knees and he came up to the hips.
There's your point again about just what he's below.
And you don't teach that type of scrambling there in that position here.
That's it.
That's a great feel.
Bye bye Gaelic here to get out of that deep double leg into the first period.
Score zero zero Courage takes down.
There's Jack and Mona Eustace, the father and coach of the Eustace brothers, Luke and Ty, who she let the other.
Yeah, this is tough.
And I can imagine I Iowa State, they'll start in a down position, get the state Gaelic shows down.
You just didn't.
Didn't try to ride him.
But there's the shot.
Good shot.
Fight and fight and there's maybe the size difference.
Looks like he was able to just drop that leg, put the weight on him and he said, wow, I, I this guy's bigger now.
I gave him one of my best Jerry and I shot it and I had it zero zero.
But, you know, one zero in favor of Iowa State after the escape, I see some people in the audience is over there.
And I had to look across I see my family sat there in the front row over there.
But I think I see my daughter, Molly, who's on the swim team, and she's with us a several the swim team members that just came back from a a tournament over in the tournament.
But invitational that's hard to in the last I've been watching swimming for the last three days so they have to get up early in the morning and train long hours.
Well I don't know if they have to, but that's what the coaches make them do.
So they they they're there and they don't think much of it.
As far as I know.
They just do it all the time.
Let me ask you, Dad, did when did did any of your guys just not have to they just kind of just did it when they wanted to.
Friends are Well, if you could find friends or you know he was always studying philosophy and things.
So you know one of those things, it was a philosophical difference between me and him as far as whether he should be there at 6:00 in the morning.
Yeah, just optional workouts.
All those were just optional.
Front headlock there by Eustace.
What's he need to do here?
He needs to be able to cut the corner a little bit better.
He's kind of staying out front too much, but I'd have to give the credit to Iowa State on their guys the match up to get here.
A couple of freshmen going after it.
Probably maybe one of the toughest weight classes in America right here.
They're going to try to fight their way into the mix.
But right now, all they have to worry about is each other, too.
Redshirt freshman Eustace from Iowa going against Gaelic from Iowa State.
You know, both of them have actually had some pretty good shots, but I just don't see enough of them.
They're doing a lot of little lingering around, hand fighting a little bit lean on each other.
They you know, they need to pick up their actual skills as far as technical moves and moving each other pretty well.
But I need to hit more holes the almost call it for a stall.
Hurry.
Did you go in all it took one morning on Gaelic.
I think that's a good call Dante uses came up with two or three into the first end of the first period.
We asked Bobby Douglas earlier to assess his team.
At this point you have one morning.
Hey well, we're rebuilding the team.
Obviously you don't get over guys like Haskett and Sanderson.
Last year's performance was just a magnificent job that those guys did.
It peaked at the right time.
The they trained hard and they really brought back a lot of tradition to Iowa State.
Now, this year's team is a very young and inexperienced team.
You'll struggle with two needs and we'll try to find ways of getting better as the season goes on.
A good team to be in it.
Well, one advantage of Carver Hawkeye for a redshirt freshman is we just saw the fans behind you.
His brother already win wins a big match.
Ty used to scores to go ahead, 3 to 1 with a minute 20 left in the third period.
I'm Tim Johnson, along with Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons at Carver Hawkeye Arena for the Iowa State Iowa Wrestling.
Mm.
Tell me tell how.
Ashley You're looking at Gaelic.
Nate Gaelic.
You're down from Tucson, Arizona, Sunnyside High School going up against Ty Justis there.
Who's ahead 3 to 1 right now with a minute.
14 left.
A reminder that today at intermission, we'll show you our college wrestling schedule for this season.
Plus, we'll give you our Web page address and let you know about some of the ways you can interact with us on the World Wide Web plan to watch today.
At intermission.
There's an escape.
Nice job by the right time.
Yeah.
Get back into the match.
Great job by Iowa State.
Their escape makes it 3 to 2.
We've got a close one here.
It's 3 to 2.
There's no right time advantage right now.
With 52 seconds left in the match.
The whole key is who's going to be aggressive here?
Who's going to be aggressive from a tactical point of view and try to score the next point shot by Iowa State's gay like he's having a hard time getting through, uses his head, hands, defense, third down.
I mean, yeah, he certainly is.
But you know I think user served as easy as he shot on them two doubles in that second one really caught him I'd be setting up my scoring opportunity instead of just trying to protect my lead because take my lead, I could lose by one point real easily.
Well, as I could build my lead, I could probably win by three here and four.
From a coaching point of view, you want to build the confidence, but it's it's a big match for both guys.
Even though one guy has a size advantage here.
Well, 15 seconds left and the advantage right now, Iowa's Ty used just up 3 to 2.
He does not have to take down the win garlick does a little bit too little too late shot.
He's just warning him off.
There's a shot over Houston's family.
A second win for the Houston family.
Ty, you look at it.
Gwynn's fired up, right?
Oh, come on over, Nate.
That's a good feeling.
Follow an older brother there with a big win.
Say, when you want to build championship teams, that's kind of things you got to do.
You got to build confidence.
People know both these kids, I'm sure, need some confidence.
Based on Iowa State Bobby Championships definitely needs, you know what would have been nice for him to have the guy win at the same weight.
He will be facing Southern California in the 2003 Orange Bowl there.
So let's look at this.
The reaction, doing a good job of staying on him right there towards the end.
Maybe after today.
And there's just this reaction.
Big win for the freshman.
There's mom blowing out a sigh of relief you got to today.
That's pretty good work for a mother to wins.
She's been through two matches, a football coach.
She's been a lot through a lot of matches in her day.
And look, all she here we have 157 Mattson versus Anderson.
And Anderson, a senior from Iowa, a freshman for Iowa State.
Nels Mattson, £57 for Iowa State is massive.
And Anderson, Dan is one of those guys has been in the Hawkeye program for a while, and I don't believe he's placed in the national tournament yet.
And, you know, if I was going to have any hopes of wrestling that title away from Minnesota, our number one ranked Oklahoma State, they need guys like this who've been in the room for a while to step up and, you know, do well at the national tournament.
Absolutely.
This kid has been close.
I think he's been right there to the all-American round once or twice, just a matter of a been a little bit limited.
On his scoring offense and being able to get out when he needs to get out.
So here's a kid that if you want to get your program, you know, when he leaves in the future, he needs to have a great year and end up right there.
I was feeling good about his career.
You know, it's just he's a good student, you know, I'm sure he's he's he feels okay, but I'd like to see him.
Come on.
Because he's got the capabilities.
Well, they're both Iowa high School wrestlers, Anderson.
Matt Anderson, the senior from Shenandoah, Iowa.
He was a two time state champion.
And Nels Mattson from right there, hometown Ames, Iowa, Ames High School to Iowa's match before we were Minnesota versus Arizona.
When it comes down to high school, now we're in state.
Well, match and I don't think he has a lot of experience here.
He obviously wrestled Ames High School and he walked on to the team here.
And, you know, you never know.
You keep you keep a guy like Nels in the room.
And in this case, you have several examples of guys that have come to both the Iowa Iowa State Room and have kind of bloomed a little bit later.
But this is probably beyond his experience level.
I made a good little counter there.
He's come around, it's 2 to 1 in favor of Anderson after a takedown and then an escape for Mattson.
That's to take out two more for Anderson makes the score four, two, one, both scoring situations where because Mattson off the front headlock stopped and held the elbow when one guy moved, he needed to move to keep absolutely straight on with him.
And when he gave him that angle is over if he thought he had enough by holding on.
But you've got to stay driven.
You got to stay straight on with him.
You give him an angle, they can come around, especially from a front headlock position.
And that's where, you know, Anderson scored on both positions.
We have 20 seconds left in the first period, the writing time being racked up by Matt Anderson, who's ahead 4 to 1, huh?
To take on the strength of two takedowns?
Yeah, he was unaware of what time it was and he was going to let him go.
But then he heard the referee of the coaches yell No, and he went right back to it and kept that one point escape off of the top of the scoreboard.
They go back to the center.
There's only one second left in the first period, scores for two one in favor.
Anderson from Iowa.
Iowa leads 10 to 4.
And the team in scoring shows he's coachable, real coachable.
Iowa, your choice takes down second grade.
Final minute three, right time.
Wait, wait down.
Tell him there's one escape for Matt Anderson.
Makes the score 5 to 1 on his escape there.
He's reaching in with his hands.
His elbows were out, you know against a real tough competitor.
The one that is a good writer.
He needs to dig his elbows in to come through.
Otherwise he just won't get out.
A guy girl rage all day as a nice cross pick kind of ended up Guys got some pretty good hips here.
It's tough to finish immediately.
This can wear on you here in the bottom guy if you are, Anderson, if you don't finish there, you got to get his head out, get him off the mat.
That's going to give you an opportunity to score once your head on the mat.
Well, there's no question that the senior has the advantage here over the freshman.
Matt Anderson is out seven one with advantage time now really having no trouble at all.
Pushing Iowa State Madsen away for an escape makes the score 7 to 2, Anderson looking for a high crotch but he's not getting a corner.
So it's making it difficult, even though he's doing a pretty good job of switching off here and he's fighting, there's taking a lot longer than it should.
He's fighting his hips right now and he end up it's going to wear on him what he wants to do here needs to get his head out of there.
Nancy puts his stuff on there.
He needs to keep his head stuffed.
If he comes up in here, it's not good for for Madsen, you need to keep the weight down on the head to get a like a stalemate.
There's a kind of a knee breaker here.
You got to be careful here.
As the referee said, Watch Anderson's me a little bit and it's not worth the points here.
Early season that's Keith Cool and the referee up on and I'd just like to say I'd like to just say hi to Elijah Kuhlman and the son, the nine year old son of Keith Kuhlman, who was diagnosed in in May with ALS, a form of leukemia, and has just recently.
And he's recovering from a bone marrow transfer from his his brother Isaac, who's here today.
But Elijah is home with his sister Hannah and his mom, Jody.
And we just want to wish you the Godspeed and recovery.
Let's go to Jim Gibbons right now.
Thanks down there.
Thank you, Tim.
I'm we're here with the last match winner Ty used entire you've got a chance to watch your brother win several matches out here, but that'd be pretty special for you to get your first big win.
And Hawkeye Carver?
Yeah.
Last year, the Lehigh Kid, it was, you know, it's.
We kind of had the meet in hand, so it was a big deal.
I mean, it doesn't compare to this.
Obviously, it's Iowa State and you really want to give points to your team because this is a big old deal, 30 and it all looks like we're going to get it.
You know, I don't want to say it too early, but I think we're going to you don't want to be the first team probably to give up that lost.
Definitely not.
And I mean, especially if, you know, if you did lose, if the team lost and you lost, I'd be a be a tough thing to take.
But it's it's a neat deal to give some points to the team.
Finally, congratulations and good luck the rest of the year.
Thank you.
Thank you, Jim.
And interview with Ty Eustis, the winner there.
And here's another takedown for Matt Anderson.
Makes the score 9 to 3 and I just like to finish the thought on Elijah Pullman, the son of Keith, because Keith was talking to me about the the great outpouring of support from the family of wrestling, the officials, coaches and everybody that supported their family while their son, a young wrestler he's been wrestling before, preach in preschool.
Elijah has been fighting this leukemia and a bone marrow transplant, and his brother gets it.
And what a tremendous story of bravery and courage and of the wrestling family being there for one of their own, the Poumons and Elijah.
There's two more for Matt Anderson makes the score 11 to 4 and with an advantage.
That would be a major decision.
He's made the same mistake every time on that front headlock.
He just doesn't react on it.
But it's probably something that he'll go work on for the next time.
But but again, this is just probably first Iowa State match and it's probably intimidating being out there.
Get one, get one.
It's a ten for 11 for decision right now.
He needs 11 for decision and he's got the major.
So he's going to write him out.
He's going to try to write him out in the last 20 seconds.
And that would be the key kind of victory for Iowa State if he just would get an escape point to prove it.
And keep that extra point off the scoreboard.
So I don't hear the coaches yelling too much.
But but he's trying there and putting a little pain on.
But it looks like he's going to be able to for sure, even without a turn here.
Like Dan said, the score ends at 11 to 4 with Brody time 12 before the extra point for the Iowa Hawkeyes makes the score 14 four for in favor of Iowa.
You're looking at Nils Madsen and it's intermission time Iowa leading in their own arena.
Gentlemen, 14 to 4 over Iowa State looking for their 30th straight dual meet victory.
Let's go to Jim Gibbons.
Thank you to have a guy Jim Zaleski here.
Jim, that looks like the meets well in hand here.
He got off to a good start.
Yeah, we got off to a good start.
You know, 25, 33, 33 is a big match, you know, to get off to a good start.
Warren Roberson Russell before it's a good, tough match and that went out so far we have to match we needed team wise and more importantly Bobby individually wise and also at 49, which I used to use, that was a good win for him.
You know, he kind of came out slow but picked up his pace as the match went on and then kind of got there.
Got a tough win there.
All right.
Well, great job.
We'll get to we'll see the rest of the way out.
Thank you.
30 okay with the score, Iowa 14, Iowa State four.
We're going to take a few minutes so that you can help Iowa public Television continue to bring you the best of college wrestling.
We're at the midway point of the big dual make between Iowa State and Iowa here at Carver Hawkeye Arena, The score is Iowa 14, Iowa State four, kind of it's a dominating performance by Iowa.
Yeah, I think it's kind of went as planned as far as one side.
The other side got a big win, but they're hoping to squeak out a couple there and they didn't get those.
So the home crowd's kind of getting the the favorite of the favorites to come through.
Well, earlier, the home crowd got a big treat when they got to.
Welcome back you.
Jay Robinson, the 1975 1976 national Championship Hawkeye Team.
That must have been special, Dan?
Well, I'll tell you, it goes back a long ways.
But look at us.
I tell you, we we had some good times together and then we had to compete against each other.
And we didn't have some good times there.
As far as a lot of times he would get upset one way or the other.
But you know me too.
I'll tell you, he he probably aided me a little bit better.
You know, I think right now that we're in a pretty good position to talk to each other again.
That's great.
Jim, you competed against both of them.
Well, I did.
And they're both great competitors, but I got a kick out of that as a Jay Robinson just got about just as big a applause as you did.
He did.
They didn't stand, but they lose.
Well, you know why?
Because he's currently on top.
That's right.
Yeah, that's that's the problem.
What?
His fans are used to being on top and they like to go with a winner, I guess.
So we got to change things around.
And the Hawkeyes.
Well, let's change things around right now and look at this great schedule we've got for 2003, Iowa, northern Iowa, Illinois at Iowa, Oklahoma State at Iowa State, Minnesota, at Iowa, Oklahoma and Iowa State.
Those are good matches.
They're all excellent matches.
Illinois, we're going to get a chance to see them for the first time.
That's going to be exciting.
Another one of your assistance.
That's right.
Mark Johnson, the head coach at Illinois.
Another one, Brad Penrith, who wrestled for you at northern Iowa.
The Dan Gable, you know, assistants and former wrestlers are out there.

And here we go for the second half of this Iowa State, Iowa dual meet where we'll be at 165.
Jason Negative for Iowa versus us Possono I call thank you Arsalan Ossoff's from New Lenox, Illinois wrestled for Providence Catholic High School and Jason D'Agata, a junior from Port Richey, Florida.
Rich Wood and then Upper Iowa University and then transferred from upper upper Iowa here to the Hawkeyes.
Contrasting styles.
What do you say here?
Well, you know.
CASTELLANOS Got that.
Your experience, you got to had a little bit of wrestling last year and he actually excited the crowd, but he's probably still getting used to what he needs to feel like.
And it's a big time program.
He I don't believe he ever won a state championship.
I think he was like a place winner, maybe the state of Florida.
But, you know, this is a pretty good experience for him right now.
It is.
And I think he's but he's got a classic build for, you know, the Iowa style of wrestling and slows down a weight here.
He wrestled at 174 last year going at it at 60 and at 65 right now.
And so he's we'll see how the weight has affected him.
But one thing I liked about the got to we saw last year, you mentioned Dan, he excited the crowd.
He's kind of got that out, almost called a circle.
What have you seen it in the division three matches that we did that they got to move out there They're going to throw it.
You're not going to leave it in the back pocket?
Well, I think that's what makes this an interesting matchup.
Yeah.
The fact that the Guard is no matter what's happening, is going to keep coming after you pass L.A.
He doesn't, you know, do a whole lot.
You're right.
He doesn't.
But just as we say that, he switches off to a nice high cross and he cut the corner and I stand against you.
They'll ask me to say something about it more often with that kind of action right there.
Great takedown by Pass L.A. makes the score to zero for the Iowa State.
Sophomore Hart.
He rides with that right leg in again.
And if you are if you aren't really skilled at being able to go both ways, you could stymie as so far, it's just looks like he's keeping his base there.
You got to know how to peel there.
He comes out of there.
It's a stand up now, out of bounds, taken down on the mat.
Toss Alonzo down from 174 from what he wrestled last year.
Here's the replay of the of the takedown got a high cross cut the corner with his head real well was able to come around to the knee so it was a great it's a great it was a great second move to make the the move look easy and went right into the Half Nelson to right came close to getting back points there actually offers kind of a crab ride there and he's kind of pulling the leg to him and he should be pulling off because it kind of kept the body tight, even though he's looking like he's might get his head up there.
You control out of there, but his head's being controlled by Castellano on the left side.
But it's good off this job.
Unusual situation.
If he shrugged that side, that's illegal.
One green on the throw.
Eli told.
We're told that he had and said he had warned it verbally.
We heard him say didn't didn't make a motion.
And so he continued.
And the point goes against the Iowa state wrestler for Iowa makes the score 2 to 1.
Arsalan is still on top leg in pretty high.
If you did a little shoulder shrug there, I think you'd be all right.
But he got both legs and now he has got him flat on the mat.
Yeah.
This is a position that a lot of young kids just don't bother to work on that down position.
All the little skills you need to do with your hips and your hands, you know, you just got to make sure that you're in a position that you can come out and actually hurt.
Uh, Iowa had 41 with Moffitt.
He was in this position most of the match.
It's one of those essential positions that you don't master.
You're going to get controlled Barcelona doing the controlling right now and trying to drive a little action by Delgado.
He's trying to get out there but didn't score two to want to feed off Barcelona with a minute 52 riding time after the first down score.
Fred out right away.
That got a lot of riding to be ready to start get ready to go for take up facing still control.
That's one escape escape.
Absolutely.
He did the opposite start gave him the one point escape it's a matter of it was a lot of want to continue to build the lead control he's going to have to get his offense going but you got us looking to try to turn this thing around a little bit.
I think whoever starts opening up has the best chance here.
Sure.
3 to 1 in favor of Pass L.A. We're minute 30 left in the second period.
Johnson, along with Jim Gibbons and Dan Gable here, Carver, Hawkeye Arena.
We're in the sixth match of the meet between Iowa State and Iowa, and we have about 7500 in attendance here.
Right?
But I think, you know, if you're coaching Barcelona in this situation, this is a situation you just want him to start opening up Right now.
He's got a 3 to 1 lead.
And if he does anything positive right here, gets a takedown.
He only takes the got out of the match.
And we've seen.
Absolutely.
We've seen him do it.
Yeah.
He's got the ability to do it seems like the guy who needs to put two things together.
He's done a couple one things at one time, and then he had an opportunity, but he didn't follow up on.
It's kind of like you do something, you watch instead of do something and do it again or do something, follow through.
Both guys are kind of just jockeying around.
They're just kind of waiting for something to fall down.
And that's not going to happen.
The keys to success in this sport are quite simple.
It's just a matter of doing them.
You talked about underneath, you talked about putting things together and it's just put it's very simple.
The principles to success is certainly is and I just love again I think both both these guys just are taking out energy that I would like to see.
There should be more holes hit more holds more holes and the effort here, you know, it's a tough for us to match, but but it's just it's not what you know, what you need to do to really be not really dominant, to create exciting best kind of wrestling more more and push it sharp.
You got to set those holes.
There's a good shot.
But he was up the hips against the guy.
He's got a little center of gravity.
You got to hit the guy low.
If you're going to penetrate hurdle.
I don't know if God has pulled the trigger yet.
Really?
That's what I was thinking.
He hasn't really pulled the trigger.
Let's go to Jim Gibbons, who has a special guest, Chris Campbell.
Thank you.
Him.
I'm here with Chris Campbell.
And Chris, you know, I had no trouble with the way a lot of people know this.
I learned a lot of my wrestling from Chris and back here for the reunion.
Was it kind of feel like it was great to be back?
Obviously, having been a part of the national championship teams that we created here is was really wonderful.
To come back and be part of this program has been great.
Well, you know the rivalry really well, too, because you coach at Iowa State and coach me coach at Iowa State for four years.
And coach just had a great student because, I mean, you had a great shot.
It was natural.
All I had to do is teach.
You got to finish and you won the Nationals.
I don't know.
I don't think people know how good a coach this guy was.
But hey, almost got a Social Security check.
By the time he got that bronze medal, he won it at age 39, but also was a 1981 world champion.
So world class wrestler, a world class guy and a great coach.
Yeah, it's been fun.
And I just really want to you have to thank the University of Iowa for giving me an opportunity to wrestle here and all viral people.
Really?
Because I really grew up here.
Yeah, well, tell people what you're doing now.
Right now, I'm an attorney in San Francisco.
I do aviation law in sports and law.
Actually, I represent a lot of Olympic athletes and in some employment labor stuff.
But it's great to have you back.
Welcome back to Iowa.
Thank you.
Thank you, Jim.
And we're back.
And we just got two more takedown points for Iowa State's Pass L.A. after shot of Delgado, who had a nice shot, Dan, but he didn't finish.
Oh, he shot straight in and stopped.
He didn't cut the corner or left hard.
And it gave Positano a great chance to use his his stuff to slide by with the legs in.
So I'll tell you, if you can trust somebody that's a Laker that use his hips.
Well you don't shoot head to outside shots with one arm unless you cut that corner and pick And he he hesitated.
It gave us a great opportunity to come around right when I looked like he was.
If you read the face of him, it looked like he was a little bit vulnerable.
Now he's got an opportunity to he had a good opportunity, but he hesitated.
He let him get it back under the arms.
He was over there.
Now it's a matter of, you know, a place pass.
L.A. feels kind of comfortable, is in scramble in the crab ride type thing, but he seems off to hide out.
He does, but he's keeping that leg in tight, so he ends up, you know, good position controlling the hips.
You know, we talked a little bit more about Corker.
You know, he had the kind of the power legs.
Well, these are an example, the clingy legs.
You know, see, ours is his chest is down over the head.
He's not really lifting his chest up and getting a lot of power.
And there's actually some space between his hips in the middle of the A got his back.
Yeah.
He's actually controlling the lot I see several times where he looked like he could have exploded, maybe got a reversal, but he just is not knowing what to do there.
Hey, when you said something about Chris Campbell coaching you, I forgot about that.
That's right.
You had some of the best lip finishes and I thought, I know where it came from, How I thought you did it all by yourself.
No.
Carl Adams and Chris Campbell.
Get me some credit because he Russell here it all goes back to you.
Get it done.
Okay, guys.
At the end of that match, 6 to 1, the winner was Nick Potts L.A. over Jason day you got to makes the score now Iowa 14 Iowa State closing with seven points 13 to 7.
We go into the next match 174.
I think it does come back a little bit to where you got some relatives from Cresco A little bit, yeah.
Had, you know, I think before us there was a pretty good Cresco people.
Yeah, a little people too.
But Cresco had some great people.
Northeast, all northeast Iowa had great wrestling, and a lot of my family roots are there.
Okay.
174.
We're looking at Tyler next from Iowa versus Ken Cook from Iowa State, freshman for a redshirt freshman driver's state.
And it cook going up against it.
He's excelled in Greco in the past and his high school career.
If he's got Greco, then he's going to have a chance to hit some stuff, right?
There's one right under arm spin that was wow, really?
Had he had it set up nicely?
Yeah.
Well if he's got a headlock here might night might be there might be right there in a drop and cook I believe is there were some news earlier in the year where Cook was going to go and and transfer away from Iowa State and and go take advantage of one of the Greco programs.
I think he was either going to go to the USC or northern Michigan along with another guy.
And the other guy went to Harry Lester.
But the team I'm not sure was oriented up to, you know, where he ended up.
I don't know.
But I think Bobby talked, took back into staying and definitely not a Greco-Roman position that he's used to right there.
Yeah right.
Yeah that Tyler next to junior from Green Iowa second year in the varsity lineup for the Hawkeyes plays second the Big Ten championship bowl too.
But there you go again watching this looks like a strong position for Nixon.
He really came on last season.
He's doing a good job.
Two points down.
Good title side.
Yeah, that's what you're great, though.
This is an interesting decision that next has that he likes to go off your body here but if you have a you're going against an opponent who likes to throw like that and you've already got to point singles to get back on that low.
Say this.
Wow, he's got those flexible knees.
Well, he does.
Nixon is a very funky wrestler.
I mean, he showed us that last year and wow, look at that.
Come right around there.
But least he's not.
Keith is doing he did an excellent job of officiating that.
But it is clear that Nick wanted to stretch his leg out like that to do the counter.
So he allowed him to take that position where a lot of officials will stop that because it looks I think it looks looks worse than really what it really is, especially on a guy that is used to doing that.
So that's one advantage of having an official that knows a little bit about the athletes.
Look at that.
And Nixon gets his back to back.
Wow.
Kind of felt like mixed knew what was coming in a while I'll tell you next played right into the game there it took some credit there by Knicks but I'll give the other guy credit just because hey he took this guy Yeah he made that went with him.
That's a high risk move especially in collegiate two.
And to give the Knicks lead it was an escape there another two four takedown and now the score is 8 to 2 in favor of Tyler next with about 10 seconds left in the first period.
Very active, very successful for next, the junior in the hockey lineup.
Let's take a look at that again, Dan, All right.
Yeah.
This is something that you don't see too often.
Second period, boom, just hit up back bridge there with double overtime end up breakdown because again whoa, look at that.
He and he's got some good motion there But next is very flexible kept him from I wasn't for that right leg they're showing the flexibility in the right leg to be able to stop that and this one escape could have been over.
Nick, I've seen guys go over on that move.
Absolutely.
That was ball hit scores now 9 to 2 in favor of nixed after the escape, Nicks might have himself a budding career in Greco.
I don't know if he can throw too many of those goals, but he can counter maybe a little bit risk.
Can you run numerous?
Here's a kid, though, that you know it's as far as I'm concerned, is a kid that needs to stay in college, you know, just like Harry Lester, the one that already left, you know, I guess they are staying in college, but they're going to focus just on Olympics.
I always look at it, you got your high school, then you go to your college, then you go to your the Olympics.
Now you take out this logical progression.
You know, it's just I think, you know, every once in a while there could be something that's different.
But I would recommend that procedure.
Well, it's just like the the kid that just goes out for one sport.
I mean, you learn how to compete in other sports, too.
And grand and college wrestling is a little bit different thing than Greco there.
There are some similarities, but you you lose your opportunities to compete.
There's only what the National open maybe a couple of tournaments and if you're lucky enough to make a world touring team, you get some experience that way.
But there's just not as many opportunities to compete like there would be in a college situation.
Well, you know, and then we're we're also struggling, too, at the Olympic level right now, just in the standpoint of not knowing whether both disciplines are going to be in the sport, which needs to be picked up by the wrestling community in the next year because there's going to be a vote on it in a year from now.
So there's a lot of things that the wrestling people right now in the community need to do to help our sport and within the next year and we'll be talking about those later.
But look, I think that being more specific about it, Greco-Roman wrestling, which is produced, are one of our biggest Olympic heroes.
Rulon Gardner The last Olympics is is in danger of not being included in the Olympics, which is more than Greco.
It's also possible freestyle, it's freestyle or Greco.
Whether you're a faithful fan of college wrestling or just tuning in for your first meet, we hope you're enjoying this coverage of Iowa State.
Iowa Action.
For the first time, you will have the chance to pledge your support for the kind of wrestling coverage you can't find anywhere else during this afternoon's meet.
There are plenty of great thank you gifts available if you call one 877 nine 7000 now to pledge your support somewhere.
Tim, you look at that list of thank you's for being part of the wrestling coverage is pretty impressive in it.
Well and that's what Dan's talking about is the people that say they care, the people need to show they care and everybody has a chance.
Individuals, corporations and and we all have that opportunity to to give to a sport.
It's so important to this state as well as the nation.
We'll look at some of the people that are on the up working with the president United States right now.
You know, the speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert, I think they're just putting the person into the economy right now that got him.
Stephen Friedman from Cornell, graduate who might be put into the fray, a very important position for the United States.
So cabinet level position and now secretary of the Treasury.
So, you know, I I tell you, it's good people have gone through this, the sport arsenal now.
It's it's got to continue to do that.
Going to have to step up, though, scores a lot of opportunities out there.
A lot of opportunities out there right now.
One minute left in this period of this of this match.
And the opportunities are becoming fewer and fewer for the Iowa State wrestler.
And that is Ken Cook, who's down 15 to 5 right now.
And Tyler next puts another take down on top of that to make it 17 to 5 with riding down much of the Iowa coaching staff asking Nick to go ahead and cut Cook.
I like the way he's trying to cut me.
I guess he's looking for a potential back fall bourbon here points that short Nearfall situation you get the goofiest game in the world went away wondering a guy like Cook shouldn't get discouraged because this is his first year out there.
And the fact that there's a lot of excitement associated with college wrestling, especially in the state of Iowa.
And with that in mind, here we go.
You know, he's taking some defeats early on, but you got to wear through these defeats.
And this kid looks like he has a lot of potential.
It's just a matter of giving him some of this experience.
And Coach Douglas needs these kind of kids around his program.
And I'll tell you what, you stay around.
You learn a lot from this, this system.
You end up being better the next level.
Well, and that's the important thing that somebody like Ken Cook needs to stay around because he'll counter for Iowa State.
He'll be in the mix.
Tough kid, no takedown scores 18 to 6 with riding time, 19 to 6 puts another four points on the board, makes the score 18 to 7 five in favor of the Hawkeyes as we head into the £184 match between Justin Smith and Austin Coleman.
184 one drive, same opinion.
There's Jazmin Smith.
Like all American and from Des Moines and Southeast Polk High School, Austin Palmer, who was a transfer from VMI, there you go, guys.
In the Bobby Douglas program last year, I think here's a young man that Coach Douglas would like to see move forward a little bit.
You know, it's going to be hard for him to do it just with his wrestling, the NCAA bronze medalist.
But I he's he's been close in several matches.
And I know that there's been a point in time in the match where he's kind of shut down a little bit instead of opening up.
And if you make a big difference in this kid's career his senior year.
Well, I tell you what, I think you're probably going to see a lot from Justin Smith in this match.
Mean.
Remember early in his career, he had to go out there and wrestle Carl Sanderson about two or three times and had to deal with all those flurries.
Okay, I was able to throw at you.
So here's an opportunity for him to really shine in front of a big crowd like that.
He surprised that he wasn't very aggressive.
Well, I think you're making a good point.
Joseph Smith was at this point last year needing to make the move and he did at this point last year at this time, Austin Palmer is right now where Jazmin Smith was at.
Smith was third in the Big Ten, third in the country and dominant.
Now in many ways Iowa is in women's basketball, but I don't think you'll see, you know, it's hard to say exactly what's going to happen this match, but I think Palmer is good enough to slow Smith down to the point where he's going to have to work real hard to win the match.
Even so, that should show him that he's capable.
But we'll see what happens here.
So far, you know, it's been one of those matches.
Nobody's really penetrated.
Well, both respect each other.
One thing about Smith, he's not going to let up.
He's going to keep coming at you.
Whether that has something to do with this match, we'll see.
We can hear Coach Alger over there yelling.
We'll get real shots, real shots out here.
Go center.
Oh, boy, That always plays a factor.
GREENE There's Frank and Becky Smith.
That's Jasmin's mom and dad was Becky did that was the mom there?
Right?
Well, you know what I say?
No, You know, I just didn't see the dad.
That's a warning.
I hear you're warning now.
The referee will play a factor.
One is working harder, obviously, in a tight match That makes a big difference.
There's a shot there.
We ended up one of those things.
He's made a real shot like coach Coach Elder was talking about and the edge.
And that's going to give them a chance to score right back to points Score.
Smith makes the score two to nothing.
51 seconds left in the first Justin Smith last year, third place in NCAA.
He did a good trip kick there and right at the edge there, that's where you go out of bounds.
The rule favors the aggressive wrestler and that's why you need to be in that position.
Often from an aggressive point of view, there's no counters on the edge.
Right to end the clock, get your head off the mat, or when you've tasted the bronze medal, when you've tasted third place.
I'm sure that all that's going to satisfy you, you're standing on top.
And I'm sure that's what Jasmine Smith is thinking about this year.
I think last year he analyzes in itself a little bit and he was got an opportunity to maybe think he could win the whole thing last year and get to Lehigh came through in flying colors.
But, you know, he was ahead of that match in the semis, I believe, when he when he lost.
But don't so as the you know the ranking guy Oklahoma had kid was way ahead to Lehigh when he got go.
Yeah that's when you realize that it's still never over till it's over and that's in wrestling That's why the fall is the ultimate victory.
Because you'd hate to take away the opportunity to always have that, you know?
I mean, last year talking about Lehigh wrestler who was behind by, what, ten points at least?
Yeah.
Who got PIN to win the national championship behind.
It's just a few seconds left here 3 seconds Smith leading two zero after the first period breaks down going to the second period and we'll go to Jim Gibbons on the field.
Thank you, Tim.
I've got Carl Sanderson here.
Gail, a little bit different feeling coming back here as a spectator.
Yeah, I think it's actually a little harder than a lot more nervous this year.
Yeah, well, how much time are you spending with these guys in the room or, or describe what your, you know, your duties are and how you're spending your time.
I'm trying to spend as much time as I can.
It's it's really not a lot.
And I'm still training and traveling a lot.
So but when I get a chance, I'm in there.
Well, what are you doing as far as you know, you're spending your time for workouts and, you know, describe what you're looking for here in this upcoming year.
Well, I don't compete for another month or so.
I'm looking forward to some international tours.
And I mean, the U.S. Nationals in the world team trials in the world championships are the the big thing.
So we'll all be watching your progress and at the next level.
And it's good to have you around.
Thank you.
Thank you, Jim.
And that's Carl Sanderson, four time NCAA champion, undefeated.
Well, then he made the comment that this was his most favorite place to win it and cover hockey.
I'm sure he did.
You know, he just it was a big rivalry, you know, And he never saw Iowa State win as a team.
And so when he came over here, he was able to win.
And so that was, you know, big for him.
But he really wanted a team victory for the dual meet, you know, especially over here in Carver.
So this place has beaten a lot of people in their in their years.
So position they leave with that impression kind of negative.
I know that a young man that's our national coach right now, Kevin Jackson, has similar type feelings about Carver Hawkeye Arena and wondering just one point.
And we're talking about a Hall of Famer Kevin Jackson, an Olympic champion or world champion in the Hall of Fame this year.
Yeah, world champion Olympian.
He just he just has bad memories in this place.
Well, a lot of it had to do with who he's wrestling to.
He's wrestled Roy Salazar, a two time NCAA champion.
So those two went back and forth.
And but then, you know, he able to it was able to come on in, though.
What is that next level or a very high degree the highest there is.
So you know I used to kind of let up a little bit on the Hawkeyes being the national coach.
You think he's hard on them?
Oh, I saw him.
I was with him at the Australian Olympics where he told me about Carver Hockey and I'll never forget it.
And he was thinking about, well, the Nationals were going to be here in 91 and he told me, I just I'm not if the Hawkeyes are going to probably win, I'm not going.
I mean that's pretty, pretty, pretty hardcore stuff.
Here we are at the end of the first the second period, the score is 5 to 1 in favor of Jazmin Smith.
And we asked Jim Zaleski to assess his team's performance to this point.
I said, Well, so far we have four competitions, and I think right now we've been pretty consistent in two of two of them and inconsistent two other ones.
So we have had some good individual performances, but overall team wise, we can still be more consistent and that's what you're looking for.
I think he's hit it right on the nose there.
I mean, when you're a good team, you got to be able to do it week to week to week and you can't do it three weeks in a row.
You're right.
You're going to boom.
You're not going to move in the direction that you want to move in.
You're going to be going back and forth too much.
One Take one point to skate four Smith makes the score 6 to 1.
He's got advantage.
He's head and so far Palmer from Iowa State has not been able to generate the offense.
Look at this Wow Slipped a little What's Palmer need to do right here He's just right there exactly what you were talking about and he didn't try to attack it above the knees.
He dropped down below the knees.
Two points.
Takedown skate.
That was the big takedown for Obama right there.
That move to the turnaround.
A guy sees it.
Yeah, right there.
Just that will take down right there are showing flashes against the good guy And that's why you just got to go out here to compete.
You never know what's going to happen.
And I know Bob Douglas is going to build on that.
This last minute actually could really help you, cause Austin Palmer, if you wanted to come on and try to to try to make this a match.
But, you know, but Smith's still doing a good job of carrying the match to it.
You can see he's working a little harder than Iowa State seven three, the favor in favor of Smith from Iowa.
So he's still showing they're ready to call him and he's behind you know, he's Palmer needs you need to think about scoring here but his mind back in the game or not back in the game get it in the game.
Do you hear that yelling?
He wants him to get one.
So he's trying to bring Smith from third to first by taking this shocker like that next level.
He took it to another level last year.
We're talking about Justin Smith now in his senior year trying to take all the at that looks good for the Hawkeyes.
They're playing well.
There's the shot and he hit a cut corner but he hesitated a little bit.
But he looks good if he just switched off the knee and he won all he did have to coach, he got it.
I'll I'll take that's being coachable right there.
Being coachable is having the ability to turn.
Yeah he got the major.
Wow.
Success Extra point.
Yep two point takedown at 11 three with riding time 22 to 7 in favor of the Hawkeyes Big performance by Smith.
Right When it looked like Palmer was getting back into the match and could have taken that last minute and built for him.
Smith turned it around on him and it could have been a big last minute.
There's a reaction for Becki Smith.
Yeah, well he's got Yeah, that's good right?
Likes what she sees.
22 to 7.
Okay, here we go.
I tell you, the Hawkeyes really are.
Why need somebody come through with this weight And forces have stepped up a little bit this year and this is a real key weight for the Hawkeyes this year if they're going to be able to get that crowd back.
So Iowa State's got a new guy in there.
And obviously Iowa State wants to get close to what they did last year.
They're going to have to have people like this come through, too.
But Folsom does have a couple of years of varsity competition under his belt.
But we're at £197, the ninth of ten matches.
Today's dual meet between Iowa State and Iowa.
Brian forces for the Hawkeyes versus Woodley, Milford for Iowa State.
And like Dan said, Forces is finally starting to show signs of doing what Iowa thought he potentially could do.
MILFORD You know, build a little bit like Zach Thompson, but I don't know whether he has the what Zach Thompson went ahead and was a runner up in the neck in the nation but Milford in for those for that I wasn't excited Oh wow great stuff That's great great great I got that.
Didn't feel great.
Oh boy.
Stop on the whistle.
Wow.
He was going to hear about that.
Stop it on the whistle.
But you see what Mills is there?
Yeah.
I'm not sure I have to watch a milford, a sophomore from Orange, New Jersey.
Orange High school.
Now, you know, one of the things that Phil says has in his room right now is he's got competition.
He's got Trey Clarke back there, and he's also got Paul Bradley, who was pretty highly recruited coming out of high school.
So he's got that competition, that room to help him.
And also, you know, the coaching staff.
I think with that and if he ever gets to gets too cocky a little bit, he can move up a one way glass.
Imagine that you have to go up to the heavyweight weight class with your oh, he could wrestle his brother to he's a heavyweight backup up there.
I don't think that's what you meant, though.
No, it's not what I meant.
But Marco Styles.
Ryan forces from Ridgeway, Iowa, to a high school, a junior.
But this is a classic example of a guy trying to keep the dream alive in the program.
There's this other brother right here who has had to, I think, spar a little bit with the Moscow boys, man.
I mean, he tried to keep his dream alive in this program of wrestling for the Hawkeyes and wrestling at a high level.
You know, I have to give a lot of credit just being in there.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
You know, he's absolutely got a tough wrestler in front of him, you know, one of the toughest in the country, one zero after that unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against know for sure And then a lot of kind of like this hand fighting here I haven't seen too many people trying to set up scoring opportunities yet.
That needs to be done here in the last minute of the first period.
And I think Coach Douglas was concerned about Woodley Milford's ability to stay with forces.
His pace at pretty good hips there.
Right And I've been it's Milhaud I've seen Sydney nice I'll get there a lot of a lot of hands but I heard a lot of work on each other's head technique not too many operative There is a good opportunity.
A little bit high, a little bit high.
But the end up squeezing those knees together.
That was his first rule.
Solid.
That's enough.
Where he had Milhaud coming in.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
Big takedown, three zero in favor of full size three to nothing with about 10 seconds.
You're out of action.
Both guys through the end of the first period, three zero in favor of in favor of full.
So Iowa public television has a long tradition of quality sports coverage.
And college wrestling is some of the best to keep this unique tradition alive.
We'll need your help with your pledge.
You can receive great thank you gifts and the knowledge that you are part of this coverage you can only find here.
We hope you'll call in your pledge today.
I can start a little surprised he's letting him up.
We want our viewers to be coachable, too, right?
That's right.
Oh, absolutely.
Speaking.
Yeah.
And that's we're serious this time.
Yeah, we've talked about it before, but this is a huge year this next year for the wrestling at the college and above levels, surprise forces led him up when he was in so much control On top of him.
You could tell the fans here want full size to come through.
They gave an extra ovation when he stepped on the mat and they gave him a very good cheer as he had the first Brit.
You know, he's had a lot of performances here that weren't up to maybe hockey's standards.
And because of that, they're looking they want they want to get behind these guys.
Well, they're curious.
There's two that are behind him, one in Maryland, his mom and dad, they've never doubted and they're excited today.
Well, you get more benefits than just the wins and losses out here being part of the program.
I mean, you look at that group of guys that were that that we honored here at halftime here you one of your first two championship teams, as you know, doctors, lawyers, successful business people here.
And you get that at that.
You learn how to win.
Being around a good program and maybe a national championship might not be in his future, but they're looking for him to give everything he has and take his effort and performance to another level.
And he can take that somewhere else and take your show on the road, so to speak, from this program and have success in his life.
Absolutely.
I don't think there's any of those guys out there.
They introduce that.
That's not doing too well today.
40 seconds left in the second period, scores three one here, Carver Hawkeye Arena and 22 to 7 is the Iowa lead over Iowa State, 3 to 1 in favor of Folsom.
Soon to make it.
No, no, no, he doesn't.
You know, he's fighting the hips too much.
He's fighting hips, but he might be able to stay at the knee and ankles, get it, and he gets the to 5 to 1.
But I like it.
It's probably the loudest cheer we've had all day right there.
Joe Williams.
Joe Williams.
Here's the replay.
Back up a little bit.
Yeah, right there.
Yes, That's what you got to do on the edge of the mat.
You know, you need to do that in the middle of that, too.
But on the edge it really helps because then you blow the whistle.
You try to myself.
Hey, Joe Williams, you just I just saw Joe Williams got Kale Sanders in here.
I say there's a two of the best wrestlers in America today at the international level.
And you know what's funny?
Both their weight classes have a set of brothers from Russia, city of brothers that are the best wrestlers in the world right now.
So can you imagine the excitement, the future, Williams Steel and Sanderson Institute, I'll tell you that is goes that's going to excite people.
There is Joe Williams across the world when are we going to get to see that action?
Well, usually we might see it before the worlds, but people have to make teams and all that kind of stuff they want to take away from this match.
So this is a big match.
Okay.
Thanks out there for it for both teams.
Chris Bowen Oh, they're great.
Assistant named the assistant coach at the end of the year last year for Iowa State and also a world team member and also a world champion.
You got Mike Bills Vatican as a volunteer coach here.
I'm not sure where he sits, but those two had to go two out of three matches to Bono make the team this year.
So you got some people that are uneasy a little bit right now in here.
I was I always got a kick out of the, you know, the competitions here because you see the international guys hanging around and you could see you could just sense that there's some uneasiness when you're walking by each one point escape.
Also make the score 7 to 1 where that's just 8 seconds into the third period, which Randi forced us lead six to them.
Yeah, well, you know, it's interesting.
There's a couple people looks like they're leaving right now.
Not many, but not many people to want to leave because Michael's that heavyweight, you know, and because of that, you know, when you got something at the end that gives you a chance to to like a witness, that's exciting.
And, you know, they want to take the away from Iowa State because I don't know what they have there.
But two more years closer, the crowd likes it.
They haven't seen this for a while.
Try one more.
Hey, I'm going to tell you right now, there's that crowd.
They've been waiting a long time, you know, for this guy, for takedowns, for different techniques to guess.
But here's the one of them right here.
Far Tripp come up behind.
He kind of stopped a little bit there.
They let go up again.
He made a kind of a desperate shot right here, out of position, elbows out, whipped him over again, the edge of the mat, automatic points.
It's interesting to see the scores 10 to 3 here, just where his mind is as far as how much you look at that.
Look at that.
That is unheard of.
That is unheard of.
Also, even waiting for three years to do that.
Oh, not in good expense with, Douglas.
The guy hung on too long.
Yeah, he just kind of lost his cool there.
Iowa State actually wrestled a pretty good match, except he just didn't know where was at there.
I think it because he was 6 minutes into the match and lost his position.
Well, you're going to see full sets with big matches here later on in the season.
This all could be from keeping a high pace.
And that's exactly what he does here.
Look at that.
His hand was up grabbing the head, though.
But tell you what.
Yes.
You know, in the Rust appeal, Sanders Sanderson, in one of these matches, you get a chance to pin tonight I standard you know, he's probably pretty excited.
No, probably.
What are they doing at heavyweight here?
They're also a heavyweight.
No, they're not going to win all this.
That's not going to be popular.
No, they're not going to wrestle.
And everybody wants to be a marco.
No, no, no, No match.
No match.
I don't think I'd put nobody out there either.
Who the heck is going to go get that fair or is the for Marco, Marco, man, we all want to be a marco man.
Yeah, I tell you.
What, Did he run out of there?
I missed the run.
Hey, I want to put the football.
I want to get him on the football team.
Dan, he's got a fringe.
He's got a buzz.
He didn't get an interview, so you get to go interview him.
I didn't get a match.
You go.
You do that.
He's scared of me.
34 to 7.
Iowa wins for the third straight time over Iowa State.
At least the fans were all here.
That's what I like anyway.
Sure.
Iowa State, tough little disappointed some of the key matches they thought they could win if they thought they could win with 33.
I thought they could win the way it looks like, what, 49?
And I'm sure that that 197, they thought they could be in it more, but it kind of turned out Iowa's favor here like it has for the last 30 matches.
However, there's been some real close ones, and I know I've had a closeness as a coach.
Douglas is a great coach and he's done a great job for this sport.
And I got to get you got to keep you fired up.
So I will.
And he knows where he's at right now.
I mean, he knows where he's at and he's got a job in front of him again.
Well, he's you know, you got to build when you lose people like, say, Anderson, it has got like he said, you know, he's got to build some confidence in his kids.
But it's going to be tough to do it right now.
It's things like this.
But you got to have this experience.
Let's go to Jim Gibbons.
Thank you.
Thank you, Tim.
I'm here with the winning coach, Jim Zaleski.
It's, what, three in a row now?
So good.
I feel good about that.
But this your access, the whole me here, I thought he was pretty good, you know, I mean, Iowa State always comes in fights hard no matter what the team is.
I thought there were some good individual performances out there.
Yeah, we still lost tough work on the young series in both teams yet, and I think we both can get a lot better.
You know 41 we kind of rested into you know, the match there, but otherwise we competed real hard.
We'll talk about that for a second because, you know, when you're wrestling in the early part of December in November, it's a lot different than the march.
You know, as far as conditioning, you expect your opponent's conditioning level to pick up, you know, talk about the skill things that your guys need to do, I think has a lot of a bottom.
You know, we got beat.
We got beat on the bottom both at 41 and 65.
That's that's a that's something that you got to come along and get better at to give yourself a chance to win in March.
You got to be able to get off the bottom, you know, And that's that's one area that we really got to get to work on.
And then just keep pulling the trigger more.
And I know we had a lot of opportunities.
You shot where we didn't.
And I think both teams get a lot better because, you know, so got some guys coming along.
One last thing on Paul says Nice to have him get a win in Hawkeye car.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
That's a big one for him.
Anytime he gets to get some success and we start off tough, you know, we need that.
Good luck the rest of the way out.
Thank you.
Well, wrapping it up, let's go to full us.
That was a big, big one for them.
Well, he's been at this arena for three years.
And I tell you what, he's had some matches where he just really has had a chance to win.
But there he just he was taking it to him.
He's one of my major that was going to secure it and he got a fall.
I'll tell you what, he might.
I don't know if he's ever been here before, but I tell you what, he's turned up and that's that's what Coach Solecki needs to bring somebody along to make sure that they become famous.
Well, and the wrap it up, Iowa State probably came in here and said, let's win three matches.
And they didn't.
Moore had a big win over Roberson.
Otherwise, it went according to the way some people thought, probably 8 to 2 in matches for Iowa.
But that's one more for Iowa then I would say probably wanted to give up.
Well, I'm sure it is.
Iowa State wanted to win a couple of close with some upsets.
But, you know, I have to say that any time you come in, Carver, you know, especially with a new group, it's a little going to be a little bit tougher.
So, you know, I have to say that he's going to have to talk isn't up for experience.
Well, and you mentioned experience in Carver.
Hawkeye is a it's a very magical thing for Iowa fans.
