SUCKER THE CITY COLLEGES OF CHICAGO ANNOUNCE BLACK SCHOLARSHIP AND FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM HONORING THE LIFE AND WORK OF THE LAKE CITY COLLEGE PROFESSOR, ACTIVIST, AND HISTORIAN.
THE PROGRAM GOAL IS TO HELP 20 CURRENT CITY COLLEGES STUDENTS SELECTED AS FELLOWS TO DEVELOP AS COMMUNITY LEADERS IN THE MOLD OF SAMUEL BLACK.
>> WE WANT THEM TO EXPLORE AND EXAMINE THEMSELVES, IN THE CONTEXT OF BEING A STUDENT AT CITY COLLEGES WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF BEING A FELLOW.
IN ADDITION TO GETTING REALLY GREAT CONTENT FROM GRASSROOTS LEADERS THAT THE CHANCELLOR HAS SPECIALLY IDENTIFIED , THAT ALIGN WITH METHODOLOGY, THEOLOGY, THE WAY HE MANAGED HIS WORK IN THE COMMUNITY.
THEY WILL HAVE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE A BUS TRIP DOWN SOUTH TO SELMA, ALABAMA WERE DR. BLACK HILLS FROM, HE WAS BORN IN THAT AREA.
HAVING THAT EXPERIENCE, LEAVING CHICAGO, FOLLOWING THE TRAIL FROM CHICAGO DOWN SOUTH, PARTICIPATING IN CONVERSATIONS AROUND GRASSROOTS ACTIVISM AND ENGAGING COMMUNITY AND INSTITUTIONS AND CREATING TRANSFORMATION AND CHANGE IS WHAT THE STUDENTS SHOULD GET FROM THIS EXPERIENCE.
INSTRUMENTAL WORKING WITH US TO MAKE SURE HER BELOVED HUSBAND'S LEGACY IS REALLY INGRAINED IN THIS WORK.
WE ARE WORKING WITH HER TO DEVELOP A SMALL MALL COMMITTEE OF FOLKS AFTER THE FIRST REVIEW OF SCHOLARSHIPS, HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT THE STUDENTS AND TO HELP US DETERMINE WHO WILL ACTUALLY BE THE FINAL RECIPIENT OF THE SCHOLARSHIP.
